Oh I highly disagree with that. If UCF beats LSU I fully expect them to have their own t shirts made that say national champs instead of the fiesta bowl champ shirts.

I remember in the ancient days that there were plenty of teams that felt they had a legitimate claim to the National Title but weren't awarded it.

 

Penn State was undefeated in '68 and '69 and '73 but were never #1. They began scheduling more aggresively in the late 70's and early 80's. The result was they had the clout in '83 and '86 to be in a title type matchup.

 

Which is what the problem has always been with college football IMO. A National Champion should be just that, a National Champion and decided on the field and not by opinion. Which is what college football has done basically its existence.

 

Let the 5 P5 Conference Champs be automatically in. If some team somehow upsets a team to win a P5 Conference, then so be it. At least it was done on the field. A team should know exactly what it has to do to be able to play for a title. They shouldn't have to be a 1 lost P5 conference champ and not even get a chance to play for the title. Because human opinion thinks another 1 lost conference champ is better. Have the 5 P5 Conference Champs in and then 3 at large. Which if we have years like this with UCF, then they get their shot. At least this way the National Championship is actually decided on the field, and teams know exactly what they have to do to get in.

If they hadn’t declined the games against Florida then it may have. After this incident UCF has turned me off of them completely. Their administration and fans are absolutely delusional.

They were undefeated and beat the team who beat both teams in the finals. Yes it did make sense. Why shouldn't they then think they may be the best team in the country? Both Bama and Georgia lost the first time they played Auburn, while UCF beat them. So yes in their mind it would make sense in thinking they deserved that shot to be National Champ. So might as well declare themselves National Champs. The only undefeated team, and beat the team that beat the two teams who did play for the Championship. So yes it did make sense for why they did. There is not doubt that Auburn was motivated to win. There is no doubt that LSU is motivated to win. Players go through 3 additional weeks of practice before they get to even play a bowl game. So by the time its time to play a game, players are tired of having to practice and ready to play. It's just a great excuse for people to use for when a team like UCF wins.

It makes sense if you ignore the fact they beat absolutely no one throughout the year. With one month to prepare, a lot of teams can knock off a superior opponent under the right circumstances.

UCF would have still been left out...Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Washington, Notre Dame, Georgia and Michigan would have gotten in.

UCF knows what they have to do... Significantly beef up their schedule and run the table, just like most everyone else. They just choose to pretend like they want to and don't actually back it up.

Majority of Auburn players had probably never heard of UCF prior to finding out they were playing. UCF was playing for their mythical title...Auburn was playing out the season. I'm sure once the game started the Auburn players wanted to win...my question would be how seriously did the focus and prepare for the game ahead of time.
