Theoretically, what if a kid was to have played varsity baseball one year, and the next he gets cut from the basketball team. The kid really loves basketball but has already played varsity sports. Shouldn't he be allowed to transfer to play basketball? Just curious as to where others stand on this topic.

It shouldn't matter whether they have played varsity sports or not. I think any kid should be able to transfer to any school and play sports for his/her new school without any delays.

If you permit this, then players start transferring to possibly play all 3 major sports, at different schools....rules exist for a reason and chaos would ensue.

 

High School recruiting would spawn up every where, "play this sport for us, we're better than so and so"....if he/she loves a sport and has any athletic ability, they won't be cut from a program but if it happens, perhaps it time to acquire other interests.

If that would happen, then kids would play football at a good football school, then transfer for basketball season to a good basketball school, then could also transfer to a good baseball school! That is why we have the transfer rules and a kid needs to go where he supposed to go and stay there! If the new rule goes in it won't even matter if they have played varsity sports it will be where ever they play from 6th grade on! great rule...

I don't have any examples, I was just sitting here thinking about it and was undecided on what I thought should happen, so I thought I would ask you all.

i beg to differ, two years ago we lost out on to guards transfering in. This year a team up the road is losing a player due to being ruled ineligible twice now, which pretty much means he is going to lose out on his senior year if he stays at the currently enrolled school. You should be allowed one transfer if there is a legit change of adress or crazy fam situation. From what we are seeing around here the KHSAA are cracking down finally

I know a kid that transferred to another school for location and personal reasons, but nothing to do with athletics. He decided he wanted to play Varsity basketball, but since he had played one minute of varsity Football he was not allowed. I don't know the solution but it is an unfortunate situation.

I actually feel the KHSAA rules are good currently on transfering. The problems come from how they are enforced. the khsaa rules state, that the player transferring, must have a bonifide/legitimate change of address. The school the kid is transfering to, must send in the paperwork requesting elgibility. This is where the problem begins, because the school the kid is transfering from, has a certain period of time to dispute the kid's elgilbility in writing.(WAY TOO MUCH POWER) Can you imagine if the kid was a good athlete at the previous school and the coach/school does not want to loose him/her? The written dispute, could be totally false and affect the kids chance for eligibility. Although, the move was legit in every way. I think the khsaa should EARN THEIR KEEP and be a representive for not only COACHES?SCHOOLS but for the student athlete as well.They should investigate the situation themselves. Because the only thing of importance that can be lost is the students athlete's elgibility. The coach or school can't loose anything.

I actually don't think sports should influence any tranfers whatsoever. However, I'm smart enough to know that this is happening now even though the KHSSA is geting better at stopping it and ruling players inelgbile. I know of a high school coach who was fired and had a son that played ball on his team. They didn't move and the coach still teaches at the school he was fired from coaching at but, his son has transferred to one of the schools across town. Albeit a college prep or private school the move was totally a basketball motivated move and the coach who was fired from school (A) is now assisting at school (B) where the son will play this season. Do anyone of you on there think this kid should play his senior year at the new school, sit out this year, or play with his old school? These are the cases where I think the KHSSA is slacking and there are so many people who know how to manipulate the sysyem and skirt around the rules.

Coaches and schools should not have a monopoly on the kids in their system, with the latitude to treat some kids favorably and others poorly. If a kid doesn't fit with a certain coach, he should be allowed to move to a better situation, period.

 

No one keeps talented science students from transferring to schools with superior science curriculum. No one prevents talented musicians from transferring to schools with outstanding band programs. Why should athletes be chained to a particular school against their will just like former Soviet Olympians were stuck in the USSR?

I understand the objection to coaches and schools actively recruiting better athletes. I can agree that Coaches and schools that recruit should be hammered to the fullest extent of the rules, but I think every high school athlete should be allowed one transfer between grades 9 - 12 no questions asked. There are a lot of reasons for this, but the focus is an old fashioned concept called “freedom” and to provide an option to attain what is best for each kid.

 

I would really like for someone to explain to me why transferring for academic or other non-sport reasons is acceptable, but transferring for athletic reasons should be a no-no.

Fastbreak makes a worthy argument. It would sure cut down on all the whining to KHSAA and lighten the load on the organization. Although rules are rules, "creative" individuals usually find a way to get around them. The only way to "level the playing field" is to get rid of arbitrarily applied rules.

Here is how I would handle transfers. Play where you want, but the school where you are enrolled on August 1st is the school you play for during that school year. If you don't like that school, tranfer the next year. If that school doesn't work out, move again. Just a thought, no need for the lengthy and somewhat complicated By-Law 6 in the KHSAA handbook if this were adopted.

I agree. Or do as MJ did and become a Gym Rat, do the work necessary to make yourself better.
