NKY / Greater Cincinnati Bucket List

Featured Replies

So a year or two after I relocated to Louisville there was a thread called the Louisville Bucket List...basically a list of things you've "gotta do" while you're living in Louisville.

Since our good friend @Getslow is relocating to the City of Seven Hills, I figured it would be appropriate to put together a similar list for the greater Cincinnati area. What are some places you need to go, events to attend, foods and beers you need to try, etc. if you find yourself living in greater Cincinnati?

This is relevant to my interests. Good content forthcoming.

I need some recommendations.

Eating Goetta and Cincinnati Chili are pretty obvious starts on this...but to do a little better on saying "try goetta" and "try Cincinnati chili" (which I'm pretty positive you've done before), I'd highly suggest trying some of the different varieties.

I think virtually the only goetta you can get in grocery stores it Glier's, which is great...but give the goetta from Eckerlin Meat's a try. Eckerlin's is a 166 year old butcher shop located in Findlay Market. The goetta at Bill Finke & Sons butcher shop in Ft. Wright (a stone's throw from Cov Cath) is really solid too. Avril-Bleh is a 125 year old meat shop downtown that makes their own goetta, and Stehlin's is a meat shop up in Colerain that make's their own as well.

There are also a ton of mom & pop restaurants around town that home-make Cincinnati chili. I made a list of most all of them several years back here in this thread. I highly recommend Camp Washington Chili.

You should definitely check out a Edler High home football game at The Pit in Price Hill sometime. If you can catch a game there against Moeller, St. X, LaSalle, or Colerain, even better.

And personally speaking, I highly recommend catching a Cov Cath basketball game in Park Hills. They have home games this upcoming January against Winton Woods (OH), Cooper, and St. Xavier (OH). All of those games should make for a pretty great environment to watch the Colonels and the Colonel Crazies in action.

Do any of the following:

1. Go to a Highlands football game.

2. Go to an FC Cincinnati soccer game.

3. Go to the Cincinnati Zoo.

4. Go to Kings Island.

5. Get a chilito from Taco Casa.

Sammy's Craft Burgers & Beers - It's in Blue Ash on Creek Rd. I have to go up to Cincinnati several times a year for work and it's just up the road from the hotel at which I usually stay. Pretty small place but the burgers are good and they always have a good selection of beer on tap.

I've always enjoyed going to Jungle Jim's International Market. It's amazing what all they have there, I've never seen anyplace else like it.

Drive 60 miles east and get to a regional semifinal or final game at The Fieldhouse. Pregame meal at Pasquales's on me. Best high-school hoops atmosphere anywhere, and the company will be outstanding.

Second Finke goetta...it's the best IMO.

I grew up behind Pleasant Ridge Chili. Awesome recipe.

In NKY, there is a Catholic Church every 2-3 miles or so. A must see is the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption, one of 85 minor basilicas in the United States. It has three pipe organs and has one of the largest stain glass windows in the world. My wife and I were married there.

It's THE largest hand-made stained glass window in the world.

Walk the Suspension Bridge and kiss your sweetheart on the small plate that marks the middle of the river.

Shop at Findlay Market and then go hang out in Over-the-Rhine. It used to be considered one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the United States. Here's a quote - "Now it’s Cincinnati’s premiere entertainment district, overflowing with fabulous restaurants, hip bars, breweries, fashionable shops, theatres, and a gorgeous park."

Music Hall - Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra - Cincinnati Pops Orchestra - May Festival.
