If Mayfield comes out and takes care of business as they should, they should handle whoever they play in the region, but, on any given night, a few breaks here and there and boom, you're getting ready for hoops action.. I have to admit, the 1st couple of rounds in the playoffs are usually pretty boring, but, the 3rd and 4th rounds brings out the Cardinal faithful in full force and thats usually when they're playing there best...

I honestly don't know how CardsVoice, Toothpick, westsider, Mayfieldsportsfan, GoBigRed, and all the rest of you redbird rooters keep from getting bored the first 3 weeks of November each year.

 

 

The first couple of rounds can sometimes be blowouts, but we have had our hands full a few times in the 2nd round against some very good Crittenden County teams...but sometimes that hurts us when we take on tougher opponents. One thing is for sure, Hearsay, whomever makes it out of the region up there with Bardstown, Bethlehem, Danville, and Frankfort will defintely be battle tested come the day after Thanksgiving.

A bardstown vs. mayfield rematch would be highly anticipated around here, cardsvoice, thats is region 2.

Honestly Hear, it hasnt always been a cake walk and Metcal, Russellville and Murray all recall 1997, Murray has had some great teams as recent as a few seasons ago

As it would around here...Region 1, that is....I always enjoy that Thanksgiving weekend semifinal game....Hope to see Bardstown in it, I trully believe you guys are the rgn 2 best team, but, I'm so used to it being Danville, I'm a little bias towards them. It's always a slobernocker..

I have always enjoyed the heated rivarly with Murray and remember sitting in the stands as a freshman in '97....what a diappointment considering that we beat them fairly easily in the regular season that year.....however, any way you slice the pie they will probably be replaced by a team of the same caliber on Mayfield's schedule...the only team bring competition into the Cards district next year is Crittenden(sp).

 

My senior year brings fond memories of the rivarly with Murray.....we beat them 7-6 in the regular season and played them in the regional championship game where we played some of our best football.......winning 19-0 and punishing their quarterback like i never seen...probably one of the most physical high school football games i ever played in.........

I can remember Crittenden Co being undefeated a few years ago and everyone was talking about them pulling out a win and the game was at Crittenden...Mayfield beat them like 50-2 or something astronomical like that and then the next year Crittenden was supposedely down from the previous year and the Cards played them at home and had to hang on for dear life to come away with a win..I remember thinking that clock was never going to wind down and Mayfield couldn't stop them when they had the ball..Luckily, Mayfield kept the ball away from them enough to get the win....That same year, Hancock and Metcalfe both gave Mayfield all they wanted, so, there have been some competitive games, especially recently.

From what I've seen of the Cardinals this year, they don't have the talent in the skill positions that they had last year..The line play is about even. They are better at pass blocking but a little weaker run blocking, but, that could be because they don't quite have the same caliber runners..Shelton at the QB position is much improved, imo..The Cards passing game is much better than last year and he's really taken over the leadership role.. Last years Cardinal team had alot of holes throughout the season and seemed to get it together at the right time..This years team has played better throughout the year and also seem to be playing there best ball at the right time..Defensively, the Cards have moved some people around and seem to have found there identity these last 4-5 weeks. Early in the year, they were pretty average and did alot of 1 on 1 tackling and alot of arm tackling..They're swarming to the ball now and seem to be playing more as a unit..The kicking game is a big weapon as the majority of the kickoffs end up in the endzone and gives the opposition a long field to play with and he's able to make Fgs up to 40-45 yards, which is big, when points are at a premium..I agree with some other posters, this version of the Cards seem to be more coachable and have alot of heart and determination..
