When you hear the full clip he mentions the president several times. It is only when you cut it and islolate the line that it sounds so bad. When I first heard the clip I jumped to the same conclusion as everyone else. I thought, "What was that idiot thinking". Later, when I heard the longer version, it was very obvious what he was saying. It was still stupid to say it because he had to know that the Republcan lie machine would use ANY distortion they could. If Kerry could figure out how to engage his brain before he opens his mouth he would be president today.

If Kerry had a history of supporting the troops it would be easy to buy his story about a botched joke. Kerry never gives a speech without bashing Bush with every other breath, so that argument doesn't hold water.

 

RickyP is right. If Kerry misspoke, then he still owes the troops, their families, and their supporters an apology. It doesn't much matter now. An belated apology delivered under pressure doesn't count for much, IMO.

It's kind of funny after seeing the democratic lie machine in action for years parsing things the president has or has not said. I enjoyed last night handing out candy and watching the Dem's waterboys Matthews and Olbermann spinning away. BTW Bush averaged a 77 cumulative at Yale while Kerry averaged a 76 so there goes the point about good grades, for either.

Considering that John Kerry's SAT score and his GPA was lower than President Bush's, the lame explanation of a "botched joke" just don't make any sense. A lot of people bought into the Kerry handlers' portrayal of him as an "intellectual" during the last presidential campaign, but now that Kerry's academic credentials are in the public domain, the guy would have to be an absolute moron to try that tactic again.

When he got to this one, he simply misspoke, causing the the oneliner to misfire. I fully understand how anyone can hear the statement (when isolated as it is in the hyperlinked clip) and think he is demeaning the men and women of the armed services. That is exactly what I thought he was doing when I first heard it. That is also exactly why the clip was cut to the length that it was. It provides no context, for the sole purpose of being able to misrepresent what was intended.

He should then follow that explanation with an apology to anyone that was offended by the way it came out. Then, he should go quietly away from the campaign trail before he "helps out" too much.

Help me out here. How does a lower SAT score, or a lower GPA make someone less prone to "botching a joke"? If anything, it would seem that it would make them more likely to make the mistake - not less.

I honestly believe that he lives in a world that most of us do not. Very few people have the ability to live in a world of obscene wealth, and not let it effect their world view.

 

Warren Buffett is an extremely rare example of someone that has tremendous wealth, yet still walks among common people.

 

Such is not the case with Kerry or Bush.

Kerry needs to stop running a negative campaign against somebody who is not eligible for another term. That battle is over and Kerry lost.

 

An apology at this point, especially the kind of non-apology that you suggest in which the offender apologizes if his words were misinterpretted by somebody whose feelings were hurt, would not accomplish much. It's a little like when your mother makes you tell your brother that you are sorry for doing something that you believed that he had coming to him. When somebody has to force you to apologize for something that you have maintained requires no apology...well most people are not so intellectually lazy to recognize such apologies for what they are.
