College Football’s Growing Problem: Empty Seats - WSJ

Wow. Really eye opening stuff in here, but confirms what most people have been saying for a while -- that attendance figures are not a reflection of actual attendance. I think the degree to which that is true is pretty astounding, though. National average of "scanned tickets" was only 71% of announced.

Some local teams:

UK: 395,276 announced, 294,361 actual (74.5%)

UofL: 276,957 announced, 202,707 actual (73%)

WKU: 94,237 announced, 89,635 actual (95.1%)

IU: 263,715 announced, 152,415 actual (57.8%)

Purdue: did not announce

Cincinnati: 170,603 announced, 92,403 actual (54%)

It only takes being at one game in person, seeing how many people are there, and then learning the announced figures to know they are a farce.

Too many better options for taking in a game these days, especially when it seems like ticket prices only go up.

Drives me bonkers when venues do this.

Yep, ticket prices, parking prices, concessions, can't drink a beer in a lot of stadiums, worse view of the game, etc. The last several games that I have been to, I find that I enjoy the pregame atmosphere more so than the game itself. I would love to go tailgate and then find some place to watch the game on tv. Best of both worlds.

Thankfully, beer isn't a problem in Louisville.

All this is happening and poor UL has just added on. I've been told that many season ticket holders are not renewing for 2 reasons: all the scandals and the poor quality of home OOC opponents.

Plus.... it can be unbearably hot for the early season games. I hate all of the stoppages of play for media timeouts and referee reviews....takes 3 and a half hours to play a game.

Who told you that? I don't know of any season ticket holders that have dropped their football tickets.

Louisville's expansion was built with growth in mind. It's not expected to be full for every single home game immediately. Initially, the expansion will benefit on the big games; Clemson, Florida State, Notre Dame, Kentucky, etc. In the long run, it will allow for more people to have season tickets in good seats for a very reasonable price.

The appeal of going to games just isn't there anymore.

There are enough people on the sidelines of games anymore to make up for the crowd missing in the seats. Why are there so many people on the sidelines anymore.

Plus open end stadiums suck.

How do you create more good seats for ticket holders......add more bad seats, lol.

I think attendance is more an NFL issue than it is college. College football is still better in person. Now there are certainly things they can do to enhance the experience for sure. The drawback is the games are so damn expensive. But nothing beats being on a college campus and in the stadium for a college football game. Nothing comes close in American sports in my opinion. Just keep putting out a good product and do away with neutral site games and put those games on campus. I can guarantee you there would not be an empty seat in PJCS (whatever it’s called now) if Alabama was coming to town on Saturday.

The duration of college football is also out of control. I love going, but I know I am locking up at least four and a half hours inside of a stadium (including to and from my seats). That is silly when you think about it. NFL you can knock off 45 minutes. College basketball two and a half hours. NBA: 2:45.
