.......6A team that understands how to build bench strength?

 

St. Xavier's loss this past week to a 2A team was attributed to only having three days to prepare a back-up QB. Now, we hear Manual's QB is out and they plan to rotate two freshmen this coming week and have canceled their JV schedule.

Any high school football program that doesn't attempt to develop two Frosh QBs each year is negligent.

 

In other words, at any given time you should ideally have 8 plus QBs in your program.

I think what also complicated X situation is brand new offense. Last few years have been Auburn offense. X used QB as a runner more than passer so that ma hAve hurt. That has started to change since frosh team has 3 good QBs.

And X made a coaching change. I think the Tigers are a slight exception to the rule this year but then again we are talking about St. Xavier here and X and exception don't go well together from where I sit.

It may sound like I'm being overcritical of St. Xavier, but I'm not, I don't get excuses by a team and program like St. X. They have a large roster and a large coaching staff. Getting your starting QB ready in a new scheme and a new system is ultra important, but getting your back-up QB ready is also ultra important and they have the staff and tradition to do it.

I’m sure Coach Wallace worked on that. It was kids first start since Freshman year in a big game against a good team. He didn’t play Sophmore year due to injury so no JV experience. If Sullivan doesn’t come back as soon as expected he will improve.

I agree on all points, schools the size of X and T should never have an issue finding a backup qb and frankly not having someone ready to step up if the starting qb is injured falls back on the coaches dropping the ball. With all of the athletes they have, surely they have more than one player that can throw the ball and run an offense. The coaches should have those kids ready to run the offense at any given time, because in reality injuries are never a planned event.

As far as Manual goes, what is their roster size? I would imagine it should be relatively large given that they are a 6A school, so it makes me curious as to why they are cancelling JV games.

I counted only 8 Juniors on KHSAA roster. One thing that might hurt them is it’s a top academic school and their admission requirements may limit them some.

Being a coed school that still has a lower enrollment than X and T, I would be more likely to give them an exception than X then. That said, even my much smaller Tomcat's have backup qb's ready to step in and run the offense at any time if needed, so I still believe any large school should have multiple qb's ready to play. In other words any school in the larger classes shouldn't have a cop out when they lose a game because a key player was injured, regardless of position.

The X Quarterback had a solid night even though he had two picks. He was 19-26 for 241 yards and 1 Touchdown.

 

St. X should of kneeled the ball instead of trying to force something before halftime. Defense didn’t stop DeSales after going up 16-13. DeSales eat the clock up driving and leaving just 4 minutes on the clock.

And a fumble on potential tying or winning drive. DeSales is very good. Hope they don’t have a let down at Butler.

So one game and all of a sudden St. X can’t develop depth? Didn’t run the ball successfully and had four turnovers, not sure exactly how that connects to not have depth. Can’t speak for Manual or others, but I would say the depth issue for St. X is a bit of a stretch.
