They lost because of mistakes that aren’t typically accounted for when preparing for a game. That’s just the way football and sports work.

 

If the starter is playing do they make a few plays to win the game, maybe, but that’s why he’s the starter.

 

School size and classification have no bearing when it comes to turnovers. They happen to everyone no matter how big or small.

 

I get that and that would explain the loss, but some seem to think it was because X only had a few days to prepare a new qb, which is likely why this thread is being discussed. So if it was simply X got outplayed by 2A DeSales and it didn't have anything to do with trying to find a new qb, then X has bigger issues, IMO.

When you say “outplayed”, what do you mean? Because when I beat outplayed I think of a team getting beat pretty easily.

When I think of outplayed I think that the winning team outplayed the losing team, hence they won the game. To me any other reason to claim that the losing team lost is just an excuse to try and justify that they are better, even though they lost the game. IE, a cop out.

Yes, I'd guess around 10% of the time. Generally the best team on a particular night/day wins the game though.

If St. X has Keegan Sullivan under center against DeSales then my brain says that they win that game. It baffles me that people think that just because St. X has 1350 boys at their disposal that they can duplicate one month of preparation in three days. They lost by 3 points with the backup taking his first snaps ever at QB in a varsity game. Not 30 points. 3 points. Keegan Sullivan has taken snaps at the varsity level and performed very well when given that opportunity. I refuse to believe he couldn’t have gotten St. X one more touchdown had he been on the field.

I think the question to the bolded is why is a school that size only prepping a single qb during that one month time span you mentioned. IMO, they have enough athletes and coaches at their disposal that they should always have a backup qb ready to go that knows the offense. Smaller schools than X have that luxury and it isn't because they have more talent walking the hallways between classes, it's because they're better prepared.

 

I'm not blaming this on coach Wallace because he is new and implementing his own system, but regardless a school like X should have a backup plan if a star player gets injured. That said the backup qb did well for his first game, so I really don't get the cop out that is what cost X the game against DeSales. I'm not saying you are insinuating that they lost due to playing a back up qb, but there are plenty of ppl that are. Sometimes it's hard to just admit that you got outplayed, especially if you're a top tier 6A school that got beat by a top tier 2A school.

Any high school football program that doesn't attempt to develop two Frosh QBs each year is negligent.

 

In other words, at any given time you should ideally have 8 plus QBs in your program.

Of course there are reasons why some players are starters and others are backups. I believe the idea though is to have backups ready to play against equal opponents. From your own recognition is sounds like the backup for X played really well for his first game, throwing for 250 yards. I completely agree, that's a really good starting point for a young qb.

 

So that makes me question why some people question that X wasn't simply outplayed and lost the game, rather than using the cop out of "well we had a first time starter at qb." A loss is a loss is a loss. Rather than making excuses I would be talking to the new qb telling him he did a great job and that he has a lot of upside. A lot of people seem to be blaming the loss on the short transformation between qb's though, rather than just accepting that X got beat by a team that outplayed them.
