Yes. Back when NCC was playing in the GCL, and doing quite well I might add, there were a lot of guys splitting carries that could have been on this list.

Up through the mid-70s or so, it was oftentimes tough for private schools to make schedules among the Kentucky public schools. There's no 'official' explanation for that, but most folks speculate that the public schools didn't want to schedule the private schools because the privates didn't have to follow "districts" in the same fashion as privates.

 

New Cath's response to that was to go across the river and schedule competition in the GCL.

Two schools would play NC Newport and Homes. In 1967 Highlands played NC. hell of a game NC quarterback was Jonny Rapp he was out that game. I think NC won 8 to 0.

Steve Everson was the finest RB in NKY during his tenure at NCC. Unfortunately, he was run to death by the Coaching staff. His speed and toughness was unquestioned by all that saw him play. Contrary to some comments in this thread, NCC "did" in fact throw the ball very well. Not only did they have an outstanding running game, but their passing game wasn't shabby either. So much so that the long standing receiving record at NCC was broken during this tenure. This is the group of boy's that started all the Play-Off success, and eventually led to a State title. They were very impressive to watch, I must say.

During Steve's Soph year there was no passing. Bob was still calling his old school inside ice and trap plays. Steves Jr and Sr years the play calling duties were finally handed over to assistants and the NewCath program did a 360 with running and finally passing the ball and it sure paid off.

And to think that that young man isn't even in the NCC Hall of Fame. Sad, very sad.

During the 2000 season, in 15 games, Everson had 367 rushes for 2154 yds and 27 TD's. Smith in 15 games, attempted 238 passes, completed 104 for 1549 yds. and 15 TD's.

 

In the 2001 season, in 14 games Everson had 271 rushes and 1616 yds. and 23 TD's. Smith in 15 games had 280 attempts, completed 43 for 2190 yds. and 25 TD's. This is when the ball started rolling. Fantastic job guy's.

I had nephews who played at a small river school that beat the Breds 5 times in a row-and when Jeff Smith was inserted as the starter was definitely the turning point.
