Could we train a certain percentage of the National Guard to do the job, having rotating shifts? Just a thought, not sure if it's a good one.

You completely jumped to a conclusion. Not even close to what I said. We were talking about specific guns. Meaning that those that I've talked with and most I've debated with on those weapons have made it clear no one should own those weapons.

 

Okay, then say the majority of people YOU have talked to think they should be banned. That still doesn’t make them the overall majority...

Nope. My beer and liquor stayed in the same place everyday out in the open. I counted my beers everyday and my count was never off. Every beer was accounted for at all times. The way my system worked, when I got down to 4-6 beers I bought more. The liquor we buy stays unopened because we don’t drink liquor. They are souvenirs. Now, had my alcohol came up missing just one Time or had my kids shown that they can’t be trusted with alcohol then I guarantee that my system would have changed. It’s not hard to be a responsible parent.

 

 

Have you seen where the shooter’s father said his son is the victim? That’s exhibit A of the type of enabling behavior from a parent that allowed this to happen.

 

I’m sure every dad whose son has taken his gun and done damage never thought it would happen. It just takes that one time. My guns and ammo are secured in different areas but my kids were taught how to use them And how to respect them. They knew where the keys were. Same with my car keys. I had full faith my kids would not go crazy. No daddy ever thinks that junior is the kid getting picked on or the one that will snap. We all take educated risks. I’m sure your kids respected your outlook on your beer and liquor.

Sorry, I meant the multiple threads on the subject. This is hardly a new topic. I also alluded in this thread that I and others had ideas that were ignored and what not. I've talked about the psychotropic drugs needing to be reigned in, more and better trained SROs, trained teachers, finding ways to do better mental health checks on people and a few other things. I figured you would have remembered some of that.

If I understand you correctly, if I want to go buy a gun I have to first go see a shrink? Is that what you are saying? If that is the case I'm not really sure why I need to explain why I disagree with that. I would be in favor of including medical records in back ground checks.

 

As far as better protecting schools, I've posted my ideas in just about every thread we've had about school shootings but will again.

 

Every entrance that is used for students has metal detectors. In the morning there is an armed guard/cop stationed at each one. For high schools and middle schools you could have police outside for when entrances are backed up. The argument has been you create issues with too many kids standing outside waiting to get through the metal detectors and they become targets. Police outside eliminates this.

 

After school starts you have some number of armed guards/cops in the building. Obviously that number would depend on the size of the school. For visitors there is only one entrance and they must pass through a metal detector than be buzzed in.

 

Yes this will be costly. There are ways to generate the money to fund it. Thinking about just Henderson you would need somewhere around 6-7. This would put 2-3 in the high school and 2 in each middle. I don't think you need them at the elementary schools. The threat there is someone coming in from outside like Sandy Hill. Highly unlikely a student comes in shooting the place up. Put metal detectors in and put visitors through a metal detector than a buzz in. Total metal detectors you would need 18-20 total. 2-3 at the high school. 2 at each middle and 2 at each elementary.

The one thing almost every mass shooter has had in common is some sort of mental health issue. Seems to me if we were serious about preventing these incidents from occurring we'd try to find a way to keep firearms out of their hands. Medical records absolutely must be a part of it IMO. I see no issue with a person needing a mental health evaluation within a certain number of years of the purchase date to own a gun. What all that entails, I don't know, but IMO there needs to be something to try and prevent mentally unstable individuals from purchasing guns.

Please do explain, because I'm interested to hear why exactly you'd be opposed to it.

The cost to put metal detectors is expensive. To do it right away some areas will have to give up money. And that is going to cause HUGE issues, because people hate giving up money, even if it is for something more important.

 

If each of the 99,000 public schools in the US install 2 metal detectors at a minimum $4,000 each, that is 800 million dollars. That doesn't count installation and training on those metal detectors.

 

I am all for metal detectors at each school if placed and organized correctly. However, where does that funding come from? Some ideas that I have come up with would be highly unpopular, but would finance them in one year.

 

1. Each school give up 1 classified employee for one year (that is roughly $15k).

 

2. Have a one year 0.5% tax increase on property. One year only. I know this is hard because many places would just leave the increase in after that one year.

 

3. Take away all "out of state" school funded trips for one year. This includes sports and extra curricular activities. Not sure how much would be saved on this since many of these trips are self funded not school funded.

 

4. 0.1% Federal Sales Tax for 1 year. Call it a School Safety Tax. Allow the Federal Government to pay for it.

 

5. School districts put the metal detectors at the top of their budget and then complete the budget with what remains. Then each district gets to choose what will not be funded or what could be eliminated.

 

These are just some brainstorming ideas quickly. Metal Detectors alone will not stop mass shootings as there will always be soft targets. But I think it would go a long way in students and teachers feeling school is a safe place. It is very expensive, but worth it in my opinion. We have to learn to sacrifice some things in order to make other things better/safer.

Most I've seen at sporting events and the like are nothing more than for show.

 

I was at a concert in Memphis and the man 2 up from us in line had a small knife he said he forgot he brought it. They made him give it up. It worked there. I think detectors will work, but I agree with you that they need to be used correctly. A fear I do have with them is that schools will use them for 2 or 3 years, and then slowly stop using them. Huge expense for schools to do that or for them not to use them correctly.
