Defensive PI's dropped to just 15 yards?

Featured Replies

How about a 15-yard penalty or half the distance from the line of scrimmage to the spot of the foul, whichever is longer. So any pass interference within 30 yards of the line of scrimmage would be a 15-yard penalty. If the pass interference happens longer than 30 yards from the line of scrimmage, half the distance from the line of scrimmage to the spot of the foul. If pass interference happens 50 yards downfield, it is a 25-yard penalty.

I like this a lot because I think just a 15 yard penalty won't suffice. If I was a DB, I would never allow a deep ball to be completed if I got beat. 15 yards is better than a 40 yard reception or TD pass.

I have thought something similar for years and I have always wondered why they have never gone to this kind of concept.

The reason I don't like the spot foul is just because someone is interfered with, doesn't mean they would have caught the ball without the interference.

Then don't interfere lol.

Not to mention playing corner is hard enough with these rules now. If you breathe on a WR its a flag.

Spot fouls...boo

HS and College uses penalty only, so can the NFL.

I can't remember the last time I saw PI called on a Hail Mary play. I honestly don't know if I've ever seen it called in that situation. That's usually a non call.....the Eagles pretty much got away with it in the Super Bowl this year.

That being said, I think the current rule for DPI is just fine. Doing away with the spot foul would swing the advantage back over to the defense, and I think you'd end up seeing a lot more DPI's.

Agreed, most of the time the DPI happens halfway through the route and not at the point of potention catch.

Spot foul is good.

I don't like what is many times a questionable call to cost a team 40 or 50 yards. I have never liked that rule. If changed to 15 yards, I think the only time you would see "intentional" PI is on a Hail Mary play. It's in place in college and you rarely see it done intentionally.

I like the change, tired of PI calls potentially deciding games, 15 is fair, just like HS and NCAA.

If defensive PI is a spot foul, which assumes that the offense would have caught the ball, then offensive PI should assume the defense would have caught the ball for an interception. Ball goes over to the defense on OPI. Similar to goaltending in basketball. Defensive goaltending gives the offense the basket, offensive goaltending means no goal and a turnover.

Just a little perspective to show why I don't like the spot foul. I don't want OPI to result in a turnover just like I don't like the spot foul for DPI. I like the previous suggestion of half the distance penalty on a long pass.

Not a fan of this. I, like some others previously stated, believe there will be too many intentional DPI's on deep one's.
