Something brewing after Christmas?

Featured Replies

Just checking the weather Christmas weekend. For now, nothing much seems to be happening. I'm paying close attention to the days after Christmas. The GFS is showing some possible wintery weather and some brutally cold temps by Thursday the 28th. Looks rain changing to ice then to snow before it ends. We'll have to wait and see if this does happen.

I'll be updating as time passes.

Saturday evening update.

While the models are still not in good agreement on the timing of the possible winter weather for after Christmas they are showing something maybe heading our way. The day after Christmas may see some travel headaches for those flying or driving. If the trend continues from the GFS. The GFS is showing a big temperature swing from Tuesday to Wednesday after Christmas. Most could see between a 20-30 degree drop in temperatures in just a few hours. This is concerning to me because this could be an icing event. This is also what the GFS is showing going from rain to freezing rain then snow. It is too early to say how much in accumulations of ice or snow we may see so keep checking back for updates.

This map shows the temps as the drop from Tuesday morning to Wednesday morning December 26-27.

This shows the precipitation as it moves across Kentucky.

Both of these maps show what might, I repeat, what might be heading towards Kentucky. Don't be too locked on what the maps are showing things will more than likely change back and forth until we get closer to the time period in question. Just wanted to show everyone what I've been watching.

Seems a but further north than the early runs. Still a lot of time for it to change between now and then obviously.

The last two maps are not for the same time period as I've been discussing. The accumulation maps are at the very end of how far the GFS goes on predicting accumulations. They are from Tuesday morning. The possible winter weather at the time won't reach Kentucky until later Tuesday. I posted them just to show what Kentucky may be in for. Let's not get too wrapped up in any accumulations for now. It's too early.

No. I'm coming into KY on December 28th and staying to January 1st. Haven't been home for a few years. Can you keep me updated on what I might look for in this time frame?

I sure will.

The timing on the possible after Christmas winter precipitation is still up in the air. Tonight I'm just showing what I've seen from the GFS and Canadian weather models I use. The both as of this evening are showing the possibility of snow and freezing rain. Now let me caution everyone this is not a forecast by any stretch of the imagination. And these things will go back and forth until we get a couple of days away from the time period.

First, this is from the GFS showing the possible winter precipitation moving across Kentucky from Thursday morning the 28th through Friday afternoon on the 29th. If this holds true we can see a mixed bag of winter weather.

This next one is also from the GFS and shows the possible snow accumulation through Friday afternoon.

This map is from the Canadian Weather model

Those in western Kentucky and along the Tennessee border may be in for some possible freezing rain accumulations.

Only time will tell what we may receive. Keep checking back for updates.

Thanks nWo. I will keep looking back. May come in a day earlier on the 27th.

Just a quick hit for tonight. This is to show everyone how the models are differing from run to run this far out. First one is the Candian model. It shows a significant snow event to close out the year.

This one is the CFS model and yes that is showing 21" in WKY.

Once again let me reiterate that this is not a forecast just showing what the models are showing right now. Keep checking back for updates. Also, I may be seeing something on Christmas Eve for some.

The weather channels extended forecast changes every time I look at it. I know it is computers but crazy how it changes.

nWo, you are THE MAN! Thanks for all you do to keep us updated and prepared!

I'll be driving mom and dad to Iowa on Christmas day to Iowa for our yearly trek to visit mom's side of the family. Looks like I'll be hitting snow early when we leave L'ville but clearing up once we get past Indy?

the GFS is showing central and southern Iowa receiving 1-3 inches of snow on Christmas Day. Also, they may have 10-12 inches of snow on the ground by the end of the week. I'll keep an eye on it.

Driving to Milwaukee for Work next week. Targeting departure Tues pm and returning Thurs. How bad might it be?
