What Makes a Great Coach; Great?

Featured Replies

I have the question; not the answer. What do you think?

Examples are encouraged.

Namely, the players. Certainly coaches can make a huge difference but the kids have a lot to say about it.

When a coach wants it first for his players before himself, and knows how to convey it.

Winning and setting a great example that kids will want to be like that coach when they get older.

The standard cliches.

Get the most out of your talent.

Put your players in positions to succeed.

Shoemaker never won the Derby riding a mule.

Great coaches engage with athletes and inspire them: they inspire them to consistently prepare with passion and to realise their full potential.

Players.

Put any successful coach at Berea and see how good they do.

I would add apply the best schemes to compliment your players strengths, not their weaknesses!

Also great coaches typically have surrounded themselves with other good/great coaches and delegate responsibilities well to their staff!

Players! Lots of average coaches are remembered as great, due to the fact they had a really talented team.

How they put their thumbprint on the program from the feeder system up and all the things that effect the product on the field such as strength and conditioning program, film review, and community pride.

Players win Championships, but players are defined by how they are developed from Flag Football up.

It is no secret that the best programs and best coaches in the State all have strong feeder systems and do all the little things right.

Would a Great Coach step in at Jenkins and win immediately, no!

Would a great Coach eventually win there after re-building that program from the ground up? Yes.

Your response it the long version of my previous post. Do something everyday that leads your varsity team to success. Get involved with youth league, middle school, freshman, and JV. Build a great offseason weight room program. Fundraise dollars for your program.

The list goes on and on.
