To me it is simple:

 

Do the players still remember and live life lessons the coach taught? 20 years later, do they still remember the good times they had, the memories still are vivid in their mind, and when they talk about the coach it is almost with reverence?

 

Coaching is teaching and molding people to be positive influences in an array of arenas. There have been great coaches that never won a championship and not so great coaches that won several.

All of the above, but I will add consistency. And by that I mean routine. Studies have shown that teens thrive when they find a routine, and upsetting the routine causes problems. Good coaches aren't scattered and unorganized.

I cannot "like" this enough. I received a thoughtful note from my HS coach, Jack Kaelin last month. I'm savoring the memories of good times and life lessons learned on and off the field. I'm so grateful. And now to finish that reply letter ...

"The Coaches he/she surrounds themselves with" It takes a Village!

Players.

 

Put any successful coach at Berea and see how good they do.

 

Not to take anything away from present coaches, but put a Tom Duffy or Dave Muellar at any school and you will see exciting things begin to happen.

Another thing that is tough to measure, it helps if the coach is a great fit at his school. Not all coaches fit as well at each school. Yes, some coaches are better than others. But, some coaches are more successful if they are a fit at their school. Coach Stonebreaker is a great example of this.... he is a very good coach, but is an exceptional fit at Casey County. They are really different when he is there.

 

Saban, Arnsparger, Holtz, Spurrier.... GREAT fits at Alabama,LSU, Notre Dame, Florida.... not as successful in the NFL.... but absolutely GREAT coaches.

 

"Fit" is a big deal, but really tough to figure out.
