Rockcastle County 18 Bell County 14

Featured Replies

They got into the redzone two other times with 1st and goal and was penalized with holding penalities on both occassion plus an offsides penalty that backed them up to the 20 and one was right before the half. Rock didn't turn the ball over any, that I can recall. I know Rock's secondary dropped 3 wide open interceptions that would've went for a touchdown each time.

I believe #5 Dozier had a good interception on a deep pattern near the Rock sidelines around the 20.

First of all CONGRATS to Dusty Miller and the whole offensive line.

Dusty had previously tied Marty Reagan's record for the longest TD run from scrimmage at 96. He broke that tonight with a 97 yard td run. He was also tied with Reagan for most yards rushing in a single game with 277 that was tied last week. This week he had 296. Dusty averaged over 9 yards per carry.

Two stats of the game.

Time of Possession: Rock 33 minutes to Bell's 15

Total Yards of offense: Rock 447 Bell 284

Other notable stats:

Yards rushing: Rock 432 Bell 65 (1 play was a 55 yarder)

I have never seen a Bell County team that gave up and quit trying to run the ball as I have tonight. They only attempted 10 rushes and threw the ball 29 times.

Rock threw the ball 7 times and ran the ball 55 times.

The thing that stood out to me and others was Rock's domination of the line and physical abuse up front.

10th grader Cody Mize came in and ran the ball 9 times for 82 yards as well.

More to come...

I'm surprised too. The physical abuse up front obviously worked, because if Bell was averaging 6.5 yards a carry, why not run all night? Key injury or something?

Bell also had some costly penalties late in the game that really hurt the Bobcats a couple of times. Rock did drop 3 picks, but only 1 looked to be a decent TD return opportunity, that could be spectulated on.

6.5 yards per carry does not even justify how hard of a time Bell had running the ball. One rush was for 55 yards, it was a trap play out of the shotgun that went for a td. 5 of the rushes were for a loss.

Really Bell did not go into the game with a plan of running the football. They knew Rockw would stack the line and make it tough on them. Also, Bell started 2 freshmen on the O-line, so Rock had the obvious advantage upfront. I look for Bell to make some adjustments and be more consistent on offense the next time these 2 teams play.

At the same time I think the big question mark for IF these 2 teams meet up again, is how is Bell going to do the 2nd time around defending the run.

One area that Bell obviously has an advantage over Rock in, is the kicking game and it showed Friday night. Bell had a chance to win the game with under 2 minutes left rather than tie the game.

Totally agree, the kicking through the uprights and kickoffs have been hampering the Rockets all year. However, the punting game was in favor of Rock they have been backing the opposing team up all year with some enormous punts, they averaged 48 yards per punt last Friday while Bell County averaged 29 yards per punt.

Bell actually punted very well except for 1 punt that only went 8 yards I believe. He was trying to kick it to the sidelines late in the half and ended up kicking it way too far left.

I think this game really is setting things up for a great rematch if both teams make it back, which I believe they will.

Although I liked it better when Bell and Rock were meeting each other in the regional finals rather than in the regional semis like they will have to do this year if things go as everyone predicts.

Bell's running game seems to be missing that really good blocking fullback that they normally have. Christopher hit the hole hard, but the other backs that played against Corbin appeared to want to pick their way through the line. How many carries did each of the Bell backs get in this game?

T.R. carried the ball 4 times, Nelson 4 times and Greer 2 times. A total of 10 carries.

One thing that everyone seems to be forgetting is the 21-0 defeat at Log Mountain in 2005. Rock shutdown the running game of Bell. That was with "blocking backs from last year." This is the first meeting since, and the game plan was to not give up those downs with useless rushing attempts. Better to throw the swing passes, etc. to get around the big line. Everyone seems to forget that if Bell's QB had been throwing the ball in the first half, like he eventually settled down and did in second half, Bell might have won the game. In spite of everything, the plan worked and gave Bell the opportunity to win at end. Only the INT kept the score and this discussion thread from having a whole different look.

Matt Simpson is only a sophomore, but in his second year starting at fullback. Matt's a great blocker. Blocking RB Howard was lost to graduation and is missed. The problem has been the small line...something that time and growth will help with. Bell has back TR and Greer again next year.

Sounded like a great game... Congrats to the Rock.

I knew it would be a close game we only lost to the both of them by a total of 5 points.

What impressed me more than anything in reference to Rock's running game was that Bell County consistently put 9 people in the box. Rockcastle County never posed a serious threat through the air and Bell County adjusted very early to try to off-set the running game. At times, there were six guys blocking nine. Still yet, Miller came away with 297 yards. Very impressive win for the Rock. I do expect, however, for Hilton to come with a drastically different offensive strategy the next time around.
