Boy Scouts Allowing Girls To Join

Featured Replies

I believe the Eagle Scout Award is much more difficult and therefore much more prestigious.

You are correct, it is not a competition.

I haven't really investigated this story. But I will say, try telling anyone you are earned a Girl Scout Gold. No one is impressed. Most have no clue what that means. But an Eagle Scout? Now that means something.

There may be something to this. I wonder what a recruiter for the Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, or West Point thinks of the two achievements. I know the academies like the Eagle Scout award and the Boy Scouts because it shows achievement and taking on assignments successfully. Just like in the military where you must achieve in lesser assignments to receive more responsibility and earn a higher rank. Whether Girl Scouts and its highest award are comparable to Boy Scouts and its highest award is a relevant issue for those trying to get into our military schools.

Question:. Has anyone investigated to find out what both the Gold and Eagle Scout processes are?

The Gold is no less difficult to obtain than the Eagle Scout Award.

Then why the need for Eagle Scout? What's the point?

Wouldnt that be on the girl scouts then for not marketing their product better and getting the word out?

Exactly! Which is why I believe there is more to this than what they're saying.

Part of me believes it has something to do with transsexual persons, and they just dont want it released like that.

Then why the need for Eagle Scout? What's the point?

To tear down a tradional institution.

No, you seem to be questioning why a girl would want to do outdoor things like boys.

No I'm not, I'm just wondering what a girl has to do to get the Gold Award as compared to a. It getting Eagle Scout.

Your the one insinuating that.

To tear down a tradional institution.

Probably true.

The Gold is no less difficult to obtain than the Eagle Scout Award.

My point is whether it is recognized by such as the military schools and their recruiters. Do you know if The Gold is taken as seriously as The Eagle Scout and is given the same weight on applications for acceptance in the military academies?

I am trying to understand the reason for the Boy Scouts to begin allowing females to join its ranks or why a female would want to. If the BS would provide an advantage in some way that the GS do not provide, then I can at least understand why this was pursued.

Old Grappler explained it better than I that the perception of the Eagle Scout is more prestigious than the Gold Award. I have heard of the Eagle since

1st grade when I heard the older guys talking about perusing the Eagle Scout. I never remember hearing the girls talking about the Gold Award, the first time I even heard of it was at my first after college job when someone I worked with mentioned she had it.

Wouldnt that be on the girl scouts then for not marketing their product better and getting the word out?

I not sure if that is fair, the BSA I would have to believe is much larger than the GSA so it make since their awards are naturally more well known.

Then why the need for Eagle Scout? What's the point?

I suppose that this thread is a great example of why. Noone is investigating the Gold. There's no interest in even discovering what it entails.

In the limited time I've had, I also discovered that the BSA is trying to be more inclusive. And most European countries have combined their organizations.

I can see why the GSA is not happy. This appears to be a way to shore up declining membership by the BSA.

I am still researching all this. I still don't know where I land on the issue.

The info is SO easy to find. Imagine, if you will, that the Girl Scouts had a website and info related to the Gold, as well as all of the opportunities of being a Girl Scout.

I think it is fair, girl scouts have no problem marketing their cookies, why dont they market their honors the same way.
