I voted Belfry, but, I think Boyle Co, Corbin and E'Town are all right there closely behind.. Central, Lex Cath and Caldwell a step behind the 1st 4..

Belfry is really good and I think is the best team at this point but not nearly the same team as prior years. A lot of Belfry's talent is similar to Boyle it's young. Belfry's name demands respect but the seperation in these 5 teams is a lot less than people think and do not count Lexington Catholic out. Any of these teams could win it on a given night.

I think Boyle might be the best of the bunch right now.

 

You dont lose to a team that barely beat a waggoner team you distroyed. Boyle is overrated.

Belfry until another 3A team beats them.

Etown remains a team I think we all need to keep an eye on.

 

The Panthers aren't big, but they are VERY experienced and also have that explosive ability on both sides of the ball.

 

Coach Brown is one of the more underrated coaches in the State IMHO. I have no doubt the Panthers will be playing Defense at a very high level come Novemeber under Brown's watch.

 

 

This week is big for Corbin on multiple levels. The Hounds have an incredibly difficult front end of their schedule, but the back end is considerably lighter. After this week Corbin probably should not have another team on their schedule until the Semi-Finals that they won't be a 2-3 TD favorite against. Mayfield is an excellent team and a team Corbin will have to prove they can leave Campbell Field and beat.

 

As for Belfry, what is scary for 3A is I think Belfry may be a bit ahead of where I expected them to be despite all their graduation losses. This Offense is IMHO still the best Offense in the Class. As long as they hang on to the football I think their Offense is already at a Championship level. The Defense has had their bumps, specifically on the D-Line, but already seem to be showing immediate improvement. Belfry has two high level Offenses left to challenge them in the regular season in Cabell Midland (With two future D-1 Running Backs in my estimation) and Johnson Central. If this Defense can continue to improve Belfry is going to be incredibly difficult to beat. Are they 4 TD's better than 3A like they have been the past two years? No, but if this Defense comes along it will take a nearly flawless effort to beat them.

 

Shouldn't be underrated. Coach Brown has a ring after all. At Nelson Co., in the old 4A in 1996. Think about that for a minute.

 

E'town has it pretty easy the next few weeks until the big game with LaRue Co. in a month. That game is at E'town, though, and I would expect them to win, even though LaRue has its best team in more than a decade. If LaRue wins that one, though, they're pretty dangerous going forward, as E'town is the Hawks' historical roadblock.

@Jim Schue - Coach Brown is a proven coach. It is probaby fodder for a good thread, but that Nelson County championship in the old 4A was one of the most incredible accomplishments in KY HS football history. I saw that championship game and it is hard to believe, looking at the state of both programs now, but they beat Paul Dunbar in the title game. In overtime if i remember correctly.

 

I have been high on Boyle Co and Elizabethtown all season. I think they will be the two best teams out of the west. Belfry, Central and Corbin will have a good battle in the east.

Here's the reasoning behind my comment about Brown being underrated.

 

I honestly think if you polled the casual fan from around the State you would find the following:

- A good portion of fans couldn't name the Head Coach of Etown

- A good portion of fans would not know Brown won a State Title at nelson County

- A good portion of fans would have no clue the level Brown was winning at John Hardin

 

I honestly think Brown is an elite level coach, maybe even Hall of Fame level, but I don't think people truly realize this fact that don't follow football closely.

I think most are missing the key word NOW! The usual suspects will probably be there when the smoke clears but I have to agree with Watusi for NOW. Boyle is impressive and with the exception of Danville are rolling over everybody in their path!
