September 10, 20179 yr When you are on the field a lot that will happen. Defensively they basically gave up 13 points. That is a good day for the defense. Not many defenses will keep an offense out of end zone when they only have to go 2 yards. Not to mention one of those long drives were aided by 3 very questionable penalties called on the defense on third down. I'm not worried about the defense at all. Worried no, concerned yes, they are not a good rush defense. That takes away their strength which is pressuring the QB.
September 10, 20179 yr How many times did we fire Marvin and cut Andy in the update thread today? Woof that was bad. Marvin punting on 4th down with less than 10 minutes left in a game your down 20 says it all.
September 10, 20179 yr Defense gave up only 268 total yards. That is great in an nfl game. Defense basically held the ravens to 13 points, which is great in the NFL. The 1 td is on the offense since that tipped interception only made the Ravens have to go 2 yards. The Bengals gave up 153 rush yards but it was on 42 attempts which means the Ravens only averages 3.7 yards per rush. Which would have the Bengals defense in the top 10 in yards allowed per rush. The ravens had two long drives that ended in field goals. With our offense sucking we couldn't afford to give up a long drive. Howvwer in the NFL if your defense basically holds a team to 13 points that is great. The fact the Bengals only gave up 20 considering the Bengals had 5 turnovers is very good. Today's lost is on the offense and coaching plain and simple. The defense did good especially considering the circumstances. Come on you know better than this stat. The Ravens just had to not make mistatkes and take care of the ball. When Woodhead was in the game we had no answer. The Ravens threw their game plan away the second half. the defense was no where near the problem the offense was, but they were not good at all.
September 10, 20179 yr That. Was. Brutal. Ravens have a good defense but our offensive line is not up to par. I was far too optimistic about that experiment. I didn't think we looked bad other than the turnovers (no crap, right?) but getting smacked like that is a huge mental hurdle. We need to absolutely light up Houston on Thursday to even our keel.

While the "D" certainly didn't lose this game, I can't get quite as excited about their performance as you? Flacco didn't play a down in the preseason, and is admittedly a bit rusty; so Harbaugh dumbed down the game plan to basically run the ball with a few very conservative, short passes thrown in. Woodhead went out and he was killing them and then they pretty much told the Bengals they were gonna' run the ball and we still couldn't stop them? This is one where statistics don't tell the whole story. And I keep getting told Marvin is a defensive genius.
September 10, 20179 yr Umm, where was Joe Mixon at? Mixon had the most carries of any back and the fewest yards. Averaged 1.12 yards per carry on 9 carries. With this offensive line, the Bengals need to give up on a traditional running game. They also have little chance of protecting Dalton for more than 2 seconds. Bengals need to spread it out, do quick immediate throws to backs and WR at the line of scrimmage - basically extended handoffs. Let our skills guys work in space and try to make something happen. Then go over the top when the defense comes up to try and stop the quick hitters.

That is not getting gashed. Many of their long drives got extended because of penalties.

September 10, 20179 yr Most of Mixons carries came in the last 2 minutes when the game was over and the Ravens defense was just teeing them up. The Bengals basically alternated backs by possession in the game. Hill, then Mixon, then Gio, back to Hill, back to Mixon etc. Mixon had as many chances as any back on the team today. He was targeted for more passes than Gio and Hill. It doesn't matter what back or QB you put behind this offensive line right now. Virtually no chance for success. It is all on the defense this year. Any success this team has will be because of the defense.
September 10, 20179 yr .....look that bad and leave Dalton in. Dalton has proven he can't lead this team to a championship. IMO it's time for A.J. McCarron before they lose him to a team that can actually win in a post season. A.J. has looked good in the past couple of seasons in a back up role, past time for him to step in.
September 10, 20179 yr First offensive play of the season......False Start. Does anything else need to be said.
September 11, 20179 yr 3.7 yards per rush is good for a defense to hold an opposing team to. That is not getting gashed. Many of their long drives got extended because of penalties. My math says that is not that great. 3.7 times 3 downs leads to 11.1 yards on 3 downs. first down every time on average.

True which I guess you think every defense in the NFL is bad against the run then. Since 3.7 yards per carry given up would have been 4th best in the NFL last year. I would be absolutely thrilled if the Bengals defense only gives up that many yards per carry a game all year. That would mean the Bengals would be one of the best run defenses in the nfl.
September 11, 20179 yr You guys have all the answers to fix this team but the bottom line is 3 part; Mike Brown still calls the shots and his little puppet Marvin Lewis is the so called head coach and Andy Dalton still can't consistently lead this team on the field when you really need him to.
