The Somerset Briar Jumpers (1-1) play their home opener this week, hosting the Beechwood Tigers (1-0). This is the team from Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, that won the Class A championship by beating Hazard last season.

 

“Beechwood is a perennial power that will have a lot to say about the 1A crown again this year,” Head Jumper Robbie Lucas said.

 

The Tigers, under Head Coach Noel Rash, logged a 14-1 season in 2016, with their only loss to class 5A powerhouse Covington Catholic.

 

Although they lost eleven seniors, the Tigers return starting quarterback Braydon Burch, who at 6’1’’, 175 lbs., has the size and the arm to continue what he started last season, logging 2,407 air yards while going 151 of 236, and notching 26 touchdowns.

 

“Burch does an excellent job of leading the Tigers,” Lucas continued. ”Beechwood uses a punishing run game, (setting up) the play action pass.”

 

Passing may not play the role it has played early in the season for both teams, as Kentucky braces for the outlying portion of Hurricane Harvey to soak us with rain. The forecast for game day includes a 90% chance of rain and more humidity than most folks like during the day, with more storms rolling in that evening. But being the home opener, Jumper faithful will no doubt grab their ponchos and gut it out in the stands, as the home team will be gutting it out on the field.

 

“Beechwood is very physical in the trenches on both sides of the ball,” according to Lucas.

Ball control will be the focus of the game, as the rain will make passing difficult, and just holding onto the ball will be a chore. Playing in the rain was one of my favorite times on the field back in my day. The mud and precipitation often times evened out play choices, and defensive schemes, as we slid around trying to find traction.

 

The remnants of Harvey will no doubt make the friendly confines of the Briar Patch a muddy situation for both teams, as well as the media. Players’ numbers will be covered in mud early on, making it hard to tell individual players, but the mud will emphasize red vs. gold helmets, and team effort. “Beechwood doesn’t make mistakes”, Coach Lucas cautioned. “And they will capitalize on any mistakes (the Jumpers) might make.”

 

Friday’s contest could well be decided on the defensive side of the game. The Jumpers “D” played well last week, with Williamsburg only scoring late in the game, and on a busted coverage. Beechwood comes into the contest ranked 33rd in the state, with a defense that backs up that rating.

 

“Defensively, Beechwood is very sound,” Lucas commented. “They play gap control and work very well as a unit. Again, they are a well-coached and disciplined team.”

 

The Briar Jumpers head in to their home opener facing not only the Beechwood Tigers, but battling the elements as well.

 

The offensive and defensive Jumper linemen controlled the line of scrimmage last week. They will need a similar performance as Beechwood also returns senior running back James Davis. But the Briar Jumpers have their own running back to challenge the treacherous footing. Alex Miller had nineteen rushes last week for 205 yards, and one touchdown.

 

The ground game eats the clock, and helps to neutralize the adverse weather conditions. The key to the game may well be which team can hold on to the ball longer, and which team controls turnovers, those nasty little plays that football players would rather not think about, but happen in the rain.

 

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. at the William Clark Field. Bring your ponchos, and your voices, Jumper fans. The home field advantage is always in play on Friday nights. Especially when the visiting team travels down 1-75, perhaps overlooking this Somerset team, and thinking about their next opponent. The Jumpers, however, are focused on one play at a time, as they battle the Tigers and Hurricane Harvey on what promises to be a very rainy Friday night in southern Kentucky.
