The people's poll: Rank the top 5 in 2A

Featured Replies

Of the six class rankings, no class seems to be more disputed than 2A. The official BGP 2A top 5 are as follows...

1. Danville

2. CAL

3. LCA

4. DeSales

5. Mayfield

Almost everyone seems to be in agreement that those are the five best teams. However, the order in which they fall has been second guessed from the moment the pre-season rankings were first released.

Several members here believe that defending champion CAL should be #1. I've seen top ranked Danville as low as 4th in some personal rankings. LCA's status at #3 has been called into question. And, of course, there's Mayfield. The Cards are ranked 5th, but I've seen some members rank them as high as #2.

Post your own personal top 5 below and on Friday afternoon, I'll tally up the votes and post the results.

I just find it impossible to separate these 5 based on one game. A strong argument could be made for at least 4 of them being #1 right now.

1. DeSales

2. Danville

3. CAL

4. Mayfield

5. LCA

I used the 5 ask about but I think OC might be in this group. They didn't overwhelm me last Friday but I expect them to be possibly championship caliber and better than last year.

I am not a believer in ranking last years champion #1 just because they won it all last year. DeSales was young last year and returns more than CAL and so does Danville, a team I have always enjoyed following despite the Ads being on the E side. The very average DeSales offense appears from week #1 to show improvement and if so look out. I would have CAL and Mayfield about even but give CAL the nod because they have arguably the best offensive player in the state. CAL and MF lost a lot, CAL lost fewer of their stars and more roll players while Mayfield returns their roll players and lost their stars. Last year CAL and MF were fairly even despite the final score that was anyone's game until late and MF was without 2 defensive stars, one of which was their main defender so I feel they were pretty even last year. The other reason for placing CAL above MF at least in week 0 would have been the question marks about MF's ability to replace their QB with a young inexperienced QB. After a scrimmage and 1 regular season game under their belt the Cards QB play appears that it will be very, very good but it is still awful early to say that for sure. Finally MF's kicker is a work in progress. Finally LCA, I know much less about other than what I read and given what I read I could be way under valuing them because they are so far away, on the E side and I am generally not nearly as familiar with many of their opponents. So there is my arm chair QB's worth

@Toothpick, you can rank any team you want in your top 5. Feel free to include OCath or anyone else if you think they belong there.

I should have specified that you all are not confined to the actual BGP top 5 teams in my initial post.

CAL

Mayfield

Danville

Desales

LCA

Desales ... CAL did get them last year, but, prior to that 1 game, the Colts have dominated them and they have less questions coming in.. When you have a roster the size of Desales, it's not too difficult to fill the holes from graduation..

CAL .... They have the best player in the class and while they did lose several key linemen, they'll replace them with a quality player and do fine...

Mayfield .... They did lose some key cogs to last years team, but, they still have plenty of weapons to go to as playmakers and speed to burn, especially on the defensive side. Improved line play will also help them remain a Top contender..

Danville .... Good, solid team, but, can't see putting them ahead of the 3 west powers until they play a few more games and have some impressive showings.

LCA ..... Probably as good an offensive team as their is in 2a, but, they'll have to show me that there D is also state champion caliber and until tested, too early to say if that's the case or not..

CAL

Mayfield

Danville

Desales

LCA

This is the order I would put the teams right now.

CAL

DESALES

DANVILLE

MAYFIELD

LCA

1- Cal returned enough and have the best player in 2A Milton Wright

2- Danville unknowing to most but they may have best defense in 2A

3-LCA may be the best team but they ha e to beat Danville when it matters to prove it

4-Desales good defense but can they score on a good defense

5 Mayfield well it's just Mayfield

Sorry for being late, Friday afternoon got busy.

Here were the results...

1. CAL

2. DeSales

3. Danville

4. Mayfield

5. LCA

7 out of 9 voters had CAL at #1. They finished on top by a landslide. The same number of voters had LCA at #5. They finished well behind the other four. Not a lot of respect for the Eagles yet. DeSales, Danville, and Mayfield could just about fall in any order.

We will see what happens at War Memorial in November.... "where dreams come to die".
