Bishop Brossart 26 Dayton 7

Featured Replies

Dayton will pick up a stud running back in two weeks after acclimation. Been away from the game for a couple of years but will be an excellent addition. Best of luck to both teams!

Brossart played very well in the second half, which was the difference. Dayton showed some bright spots for sure, but have lots of work on finishing, discipline, and line play, which are struggles they left off from last season. Personally, I would have liked seeing Xavier Hundemer getting more touches than he did. Chinn, Hundemer, Gonzalez, Connelly, and Klosterman looked good in the first half. Not getting a first down after halftime was an absolute killer for them and is something that will have to be fixed in games ahead.

Congratulations to Brossart on the win.

Thanks for the info @hrcarrier

On another note, Hundemer was out after receiving the kickoff to start the second half due to cramps along with other starters. Didn't realize it due to not seeing right at that point and talking to many after halftime.

Do tell

Dayton drew first blood in this one early in the second quarter, as each team had their chances in the first period but couldn't capitalize, which ended in a scoreless tie.

Following a botched Brossart fair-catch, Dayton took advantage and scored two plays later on a one yard plunge by quarterback, Seth Chinn. Following a successful PAT the Greendevils led 7-0.

Brossart countered with an 74 yard drive which included a big run play by Bradley Moore and a marathon 40 yard journey by Bryce Donnelly to set up a one yard run for a touchdown by Adam Orth. The Brossart PAT attemt went wide right and the Greendevils led 7-6 at intermission.

Brossart held Dayton to no first downs in the second half while scoring themselves on an 85 yard drive culminated by a 10 yard Bradley Moore scamper into the endzone and a successful 2-Point conversion, giving the Mustang a 14-7 advantage heading into the final stanza.

We would tack on another pair of touchdowns, a one-yard keeper by quarterback Tyler MacDonald and a 21 yard score from MacDonald to Donnelly, as the Mustangs put up 20 unanswered in the second half to secure our first win of the season.

The Mustangs travel to Holmes to christen the newly renovated Holmes stadium this coming Friday night in Covington.

Note to Brossart fans, that update issues are preventing me from updating the BMustangs.com website at this time.

Two interesting notes from an impartial observer.

Dayton had a punt return for a touchdown called back on what in years past was a border line clean block, but with no hands up was properly flagged. Agree or disagree they made it the rule and they're sure as heck gonna call it this year. That would have tied the game I believe, and definitely swung momentum fully to the Mustangs.

Second observation: Brossart had the game sealed, was driving to eat time, and on Daytons 20. Took a knee with 1 minute to go intending to just kneel two more times and Dayton called timeout. Brossart responded by throwing a touchdown pass on the next play, and I don't blame them one bit.

It was a good game, and both teams showed out well for week 0

Congrats on the win, Mustangs! Sounds like the MacDonald to Donnelly combo might be a force this season! Let's hope so!

I would say both teams did what they should at the end of the game. Down just two scores, heck yes I am calling timeouts if I am Dayton. And yes, if I can't run out the clock, I am trying to score if I am Brossart.

Absolutely, play to win.

Green Devil touchdown was called back on crackback penalty. I would imagine this rule will eliminate a lot of reverse plays, unless players are more disciplined when blocking. I understand the rule but I don't agree with it. Football is a rough game that's why we use helmets and pads. If they don't want us to hit either remove the helmets and pads or make us play flag. Football.

Rules are changed constantly for a variety of reasons. Player safety is often one of the main reasons. Half the time those crackblock blocks felt like cheap shots to me so I have no problem with that rule change, especially with all the focus on concussions and player safety. If you love football and want it to stay popular and want parents to be ok with their kids playing it, you or anyone else should be a big fan of any rule that improves player safety.
