Good game. Second half was ridiculous compared to first half. Lots of passing and defensive misses. I'm really questioning what happened on that play late in the game. Somerset ball, throws deep, pass incomplete. Refs signal a safety. Yet nothing is said, and then it's just replay the down. No clue what happened. They blew the whistle to stop the play when they threw the flag, so it couldn't have been holding in endzone as that doesn't stop the play. He wasn't downed. But the flag was never explained. And then they just replay the down it seemed.

 

Anyways, just weird. Good game though to attend.

Line judge didnt pay attention to where he was, when the QB scrambled into the end zone he thought he stepped out of the endzone! So he blew the whistle and signed "safety"

Wow. I wasn't expecting that as the answer. No wonder it was just a replay the down. Had no clue why he signaled safety and it was never announced what was the outcome.

Somerset lost it's best cover corner Ty Tevis(Rb) early in the 1st qtr. and Josh Cornett the other corner(wideout) didn't play much D due to still recovering from off season shoulder surgery. Not excuses, Bourbon hurry up offense was the difference in this one. Somerset too many guys going both ways, Bourbon has a huge O line avg #281 I believe. Bunnies just wore down late, Qb for Bunnies leading rusher for the game is a recipe for disaster.

This was not only an outstanding game, it was a game of two extremely different half's. Half one was all defense, with half two being a non-stop offensive show, that ended with the two teams combining for fifty points. It was a game that left the fans, or at least this fan saying"I want more" And to make this even more exciting for me, it was my first time seeing Somerset play.

 

Bourbon County, who is 2-0 in games I have watched them play would get a 37-yard completion by Dalen Landrum to Malik Humble, with 6:23 left in the opening quarter. Then, with 15.4 seconds left on the somerset 14-yard line, while facing a fourth and one, the Colonels picked up the first down, on a run by Cameron Myers. The 17-play, 92-yard drive ended with a 1-yard sneak by Landrum to make this a 6-0 game.The point after kick was blocked, leaving this a 6-0 game. There was zero time left in the quarter after the long drive ended

 

 

The score was set up after a diving catch by Josh Cornett, that resulted in a 35-yard gain.

With 5:40 left in the half, Somerset ended a 4-play, 40-yard drive on a 1-yard score by Jase Bruner to make this a 6-6 game. The point after kick by Chance Stayton was no good, so the game stayed locked at six.

 

Dalton Williams a (6-0 210 Sr) for Bourbon County made two terrific plays as he showed the crowd that he is a player to watch this season. The first play came with 3:21 left in the half, it was a stop on a running play where, Williams stopped Alex Miller for a short loss. The second play was another tackle for loss by Williams, this one was on quarterback Mason Reese, with about 2:20 left.

 

The Briar Jumpers used a Reese to Chase Stayton completion to convert a fourth and two. Then with under :12 left in the half the Briar Jumpers got a 29-yard field goal by Stayton to go up 9-6 at the half.

 

Quarter number three would see the teams combine for five touchdowns, as both offenses decided to flex their muscles after working out at the kinks in the opening half.

 

The first score came on a 69-yard pass play, with Reese hooking up with Cornett. The point after kick gave Somerset a 16-6 lead with 11:39 left in the third. This was the first play of the quarter and little did we know, it was just the beginning of one of the best offensive quarters I can remember seeing.

 

The ensuing kickoff was returned to midfield by Titus Ransom. At the 11:00 mark Landrum hit TJ Whetstine for a 32-yard gain. The 6-play, 50-yard drive ended on a Landrum 4-yard pass to Ransom, with 10-22 left. The point after kick never got off due to a mishap on the snap by the holder. 16-12 Somerset.

 

Reese would pick up 22-yards on a nice run, with some nice blocking to give the Briar Jumpers another first down.At the 7:56 mark on 4th and one Reese used a Barry Sanders like spin move to pick up another first down. Reese would be sacked by 6-2 270 pound Sophomore, Dakota Smith for a big sack, to bring up 3rd and five, with 6:18 showing on the third quarter clock. The drive ended with 5:37 left in the quarter, with Somerset facing a 4th and 15. The scoring play was a 33yard strike from Reese to Stayton. The point after gave Somerset a 23-12 lead. The drive totaled 80-yards and last for 10-plays.

With 6:38 left and the starting quarterback hurt for Somerset, Junior Alex Ham came in and connected with Tate Madden, on a 3rd and 14 call, that resulted in one of the biggest first downs of the game. The drive ended a short time later.

 

At the 4:25 mark of the final frame, the Colonels used a 42-yard sprint by Landrum to move the chains. The 6-play,89-yard drive ended with the games final points, when THE NEWARK CATHOLIC FAN PLAYER OF THE GAME, TITUS RANSOM went 23-yards. A two point conversion pass from Landrum to Chaz Baker, made the final score 36-29.
