CovCath and SK could very well be the class of nky this year.

Cov Cath has the QB to lead them a long way. He is the real deal. He was money tonight. Passes were right there and when he calls his own number he is hard to stop. Big, athletic, good arm, accuracy, just plain good.

 

There were two questions that Ryle needed to answer: could the QB do enough to keep defenses off of Chisum? and was the defensive backfield better than they looked against Trinity.

 

Tonight, the answer to both questions is no. I wouldn't give up on the QB yet. It was his first game and Ryle was up against an uber talented team. He did not have much time to throw. Cov Cath pressured him. Against a lesser team he may have more time, and be able to perform better. The toughest thing this week will be his confidence. Coach him up and help to play at his best.

 

The other question was the secondary. Trinity got behind them constantly in the scrimmage. Cov Cath did the same. They were having problems in coverage all night. I don't think it was just one player. The responsibility seemed to be shared.

 

Young England got in the game in the first half. The coaches weren't shy about giving him the rock. He got it on his first, and second plays. And several times after that. He looked good. But he really shined when the game was out of reach and the 2s were in. He had an 80 yrd TD run. Broke a tackle and turned on the speed, pulling away as he crossed the end zone. He had another fairly long run up the middle and was finally stopped by a gang. This gave Ryle the ball in scoring position so Cov Cath brought in the 1s to prevent the score.

 

Cov Cath looks like they will have a good season.

At this point Ryle is not a top ten team.

 

I agree. That is why I said Footballforever74 might finally be right in a negative comment on Ryle. I don't know if it is panic time, but it is time for serious reflection if they expect to be a top ten team.

What insight can we give about the play that amounted for over 50% of Ryles production?

 

Was it overly aggressive blitzing?

 

Combination of missed tackles and a very good running back.

CovCath has some things to correct as well. A couple of holding penalties on the first drive and need to do a better job setting the back side edge to prevent cut backs. Overall encouraging performance. If the line play makes improvement from week to week, it will be a fun season.

CovCath rolls over Ryle in opener

 

PARK HILLS - Electricity was the name of the game at Covington Catholic on Friday night.

 

The first play of the 2017 season at the newly renovated Dennis Griffin Stadium was a 75-yard touchdown catch by one Mr. Football candidate, Jake Chisholm of Ryle.

 

But on a night when CovCath used its new LED lights for the first time in a regular-season football game, it was the Colonels’ Mr. Football candidate who shone the brightest in the end.

 

A.J. Mayer, a senior quarterback and Miami University commit, had a huge first half as CovCath beat Ryle 49-17 in the season opener for both teams.

Chislom held to 27 yards rushing.

Mayer threw 267 yards was 14/23 passed for 3 tds and ran for 2.

Thoughts from the game:

1-Cov Cath is the real deal and will be playing for a state championship in December

2- Ryle better figure out their QB situation in a hurry

Both teams travel to Lexington for a double header. CovCath gets LexCath and Ryle gets Henry Clay.

Cov Cath will score A LOT of points this year.

 

If they can tackle, and unless a monsoon strikes every Friday night between now and December, they will win A LOT of games this year.

 

I'm not surprised CCH looked so strong - and I don't see why anyone should be surprised.

Not surprising Coach Eviston and his staff have this team playing at a high level early in the season. With the exception of a couple penalties a team doesn't score this many points without excellent preparation. Usually early in the season offense and special teams struggle with defenses excelling. I don't believe Ryle is that substandard, I think CovCath is that good.
