GEORGE | St. X Tigers prepare for front-loaded 2017 football season

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The St. Xavier High School football team is in the midst of two-a-day practice in preparation of the upcoming season.

The Tigers finished 10-4 last year, losing to rival Trinity High School in the semi-finals of the state tournament.

But this year brings an entirely new team to the field. St. X graduated more than 50 seniors, including two-year starting quarterback Desmond Ridder. Replacing the now-University of Cincinnati freshman QB will be a tall task for head coach Will Wolford.

Yet the St. X alum has two guys in mind for the job.

“Jack Albers is a senior, and he’s a very good football player, and he learned a lot from Desmond last year," Wolford said. "He played in a lot of football games last year, and he even started in two games.

“He’s one of our better leaders too. He’s one of our tougher kids, and it’s great to have him in that position.”

Albers has two weeks to get comfortable in his new starting role, because the Tigers open the season against Indianapolis power Cathedral High School on Aug. 18.

“It lets you know where you’re at," Wolford said. "Win, lose or draw, you win because you either win or learn in a game like that.

“They are talented, and it will be a little intimidating for them to come in. You know they have guys committed to Notre Dame, Ohio State and Alabama. But individuals don’t win it. The team wins it. So it’ll be a great challenge for us.”

Before St. X opens with Cathedral, the Tigers scrimmage Simon Kenton at home on Aug. 11.

CB James Taylor looks like he is going to be a good football player only a Sophomore. X has 2 DE's that are 6'4 235. Patrick Owen is a 6'2 230 pound MLB only a Junior.
I am surprised he is still playing football. His father spread the word last year was James' last in shoulder pads as basketball is his future.
