Personally, I never thought BC was a "team" when it had Owens. It was more like one player here, four players there, and no cohesiveness. I think that the way Owens came into the program as a last minute senior with no relationship with his teammates guaranteed that there would never be a real team effort from BC. As the season progressed, the divide seemed to widen and resulted in defeat.

 

I agree with GIAT that either VanHoose or McDavid would have fit in better and would have produced a team concept far better than did Owens. Regardless of the reasons, the Owens visit at BC was not good for BC or for its coach.

 

This is taking a lot for me to do this, but I will agree with you that it is very difficult to join a team late and expect to be cohesive. Especially when the player has a lot of talent and ALL of the talk and publicity immediately shifts to that player.

Nothing personal, but you make it really easy to cheer against Ashland.

What people don't realize is that Owens was doing exactly what he was told to do by the coaches. He was told to keep shooting and the only thing that would keep him from shooting was foul trouble. Owens told me himself that he hated all the negativity surrounding him and would quit shooting the ball if that is what the coaches wanted, but as everyone who followed BC saw, that wasn't part of the gameplan.

You didnt ask who could "take over" a game. You asked if I thought BC would have been a better TEAM. My answer definitively is yes, they without a doubt would have been better. Not only would they have had a player nearly as skilled, Vanhoose or McDavid bring in good unselfish attitudes and the ability to improve the play of their teammates.

 

I will have to agree with you there. I think Pratt could have coached them better than he did Owens or Fugate for that matter. He can handle very good players, but not the kids labled as "super-stars".

Kinglion, a few things that I did notice when I watched BC last season:

 

- the coaches were definately the ones that went away from the "team" concept

- they had no control of the team

- even during timeouts, it was like the coach would talk to the other 4 players and then address Owens afterwards - almost like he was telling each entity a different plan

- I saw Owens take his shoes off and sit on the very last seat on the bench one night and the coaches just watched and then put him back in the game

- I saw a BC player "flip off" the crowd once during the season and that was ignored

- I saw a BC player talking on a cell phone as they were lined up to take the court one time - that was ignored

 

Whose to blame? The coaches or the players? IMO the coach has to take control of the team. As my high school coach used to say "I'm the dog and you're the tail and the tail sure as heck don't wag the dog..."

:thumb: Exactly, the coach has to be the leader of the team and take control of the team. That didn't happen last year and everyone saw the results. BC did have the best player in the region since OJ and as far as I am concerned that talent was wasted.

That's pretty much the way I saw it. Its next to impossible for one person to win in a team sport, and the coaching staff should've recognized that and brought the other guys onboard.
