Owens is a tremendous basketball player. His problem wasn't that he took away from his teammates. His problem was that he was so far above his team talent-wise, that they couldn't keep up with his speed. Then, jealousy set in, which led to problems, which led to an early exit from postseason play. On the court, he is the best basketball player I've seen in this region in several years.

 

I respectfully disagree with that. How can you be the best basketball player in a region if you do not improve the level of play of your teammates? Saying he is the best basketball player encompasses everything to do with basketbal ie. improving teammates, ability to work together, achieve team goals, keeping a good attitude etc....That is what he lacks in my opinion. But a very talented player for sure...

I'm not sure that Lebron James could have won the region if he played in Owen's place last season. I watched them play many times last season and that is not intended to be disrespectful to Boyd County as I have nothing against them at all - but they were down on talent last season. If they didn't have Owen's, they would have been closer to 5-20.

First of all Vanhoose is not an Ashland boy, atleast not since 7th grade or so. But yes, BC without a doubt would have been better with either Vanhoose, McDavid, or Matt Thomas....not a doubt in my mind.

I'll be interested to see if Boyd County can win a game in the districts next year. Again, its nothing against Boyd County, but I didn't see it last season. I hope they prove me wrong and win 20 games.

You didnt ask who could "take over" a game. You asked if I thought BC would have been a better TEAM. My answer definitively is yes, they without a doubt would have been better. Not only would they have had a player nearly as skilled, Vanhoose or McDavid bring in good unselfish attitudes and the ability to improve the play of their teammates.

Personally, I never thought BC was a "team" when it had Owens. It was more like one player here, four players there, and no cohesiveness. I think that the way Owens came into the program as a last minute senior with no relationship with his teammates guaranteed that there would never be a real team effort from BC. As the season progressed, the divide seemed to widen and resulted in defeat.

 

I agree with GIAT that either VanHoose or McDavid would have fit in better and would have produced a team concept far better than did Owens. Regardless of the reasons, the Owens visit at BC was not good for BC or for its coach.
