September 26, 200619 yr Last week the Astros were 8 1/2 games out of first in the NL Central. Now they've won six straight games and St. Louis has dropped six straight to bring it to within 2 1/2. Every single year it seems these guys make a run of one sort or another. On the flip side it makes me wonder what exactly is the worst collapse in baseball history? If St. Louis lost this, it would have blown an 8 1/2 game lead with 13 games to go.
September 26, 200619 yr I don't know of any that would be that extreme, but the big one that always comes to mind is the '51 Giants, who were 13 games behind the Dodgers on Aug. 11, then proceeded to win 37 of their final 45 games to force a tie and a one-game playoff. In '78, the BoSox had a 6 1/2-game lead on the Yanks at the end of August but blew it. Those two are widely considered the biggest collapses ever (unless I'm forgetting something).

September 27, 200619 yr Author Houston just won their game against Pittsburgh for their seventh straight victory, and are now as of this instant within two games. Additionally, St. Louis took a 5-2 lead into the seventh, and promptly gave up 4 runs. With one out in the seventh, St. Louis trails 6-5.
September 27, 200619 yr Author St. Louis lost 7-5. The lead is down to 1 1/2 games. And yes, for the vigilant Reds fans, they still have a shot as well. They're 2 1/2 out, and their schedule appears to be the easiest of the three. They've got the slumping Marlins and then Pittsburgh (albeit all on the road). St. Louis has San Diego again tomorrow, and then close with four against Milwaulkee. Houston has two more at Pittsburgh, and then close with three at Atlanta.

If the Astros can't pull their game out against Pittsburgh (currently in the bottom of the 12th), St. Louis will increase their lead over Houston to 2 1/2 games, and drop their magic number to 3. The Reds have already had their elimination number drop to 2.

Going into the bottom of the 13th tied at 6 a piece.
September 28, 200619 yr The Angels had a huge final month collapse in the past decade when Griffey and the M's forced and won a one-game playoff. 1996 I think.
