Yeah it is classic. But you know what? I think it's funny too. Won't be many laughs when the playoffs get here. If nothing else We can play spoiler. Make fun of the Titans all you want. They will feed off of this all year long. They will have the last laugh. Be happy that AA is getting some attention this year. It's been considered the weakest class since Danville,Boyle, and Lexington Catholic left. Now all that was representing was the mountain teams, who are good but are not of the caliber of the three I mentioned. Thank goodness that this merger happened and central ky can revive AA once again so they will get some coverage on friday night lights.

Teams sometimes get forgotten if they don't win the whole thing and memories are shorter here than elsewhere.

sheww don't remind me:cry: ...that team had SOOO much talent and how they got blown out like that is beyond me. We were loaded that year.

 

Lawrence Co. had too much speed outside and ran Chuke's offense to perfection - away from Jeremy Caudill.

 

P-burg was shell-shocked on the opening on-side kick and quick Bulldog score. We never did recover.

 

I take a Zen approach to this, though. P-burg was simply due for some payback from Lawrence. Prestonsburg had beaten Lawrence Co. in the '91 and '92 playoffs in games that still disturb some folks I know around here (in Lawrence Co.).

Mercer should be about 5 in 3A

I don't believe anybody gave that Boyle Co team much of a game. I could be wrong but that was one of the closest games Boyle played that year.

 

As for Russell in the 90s.

99 lost to Boyle Co. (8-4)

98 lost 28-22 to a Prestonsburg team that made it to the state finals.(7-4)

96(20-14) & 95(35-6) were beaten out in the region by Breathitt Co during the Bobcats back to back state titles. (10-2 both years)

94 undefeated until upset by Whitesburg 14-7 in the regional final. (12-1)

93 upset by Prestonsburg at home 21-0 in regional final. (11-2)

92 lost to Prestonsburg 13-3 in 2nd round of playoffs.(8-4)

91 upset by Lawrence Co 18-15 in 2nd round of AAA playoffs. (8-4)

 

 

That '93 game wasn't an "upset". Prestonsburg was undefeated coming into the game, while Russell had a loss. That Blackcat team was the one that stopped Danville's (at the time) record winning streak in the State Semi.

 

1993 ... lost to Mayfield.

 

That's the one that still hurts...

I think this is a big reason why I take the "2A football isn't what it's supposed to be" stuff to heart.

 

Belfry, Russell, and Breathitt Co. spent time in 3A. Middlesboro occasionally flips to 1A. Corbin has stayed in 2A, but is now in the western semi. Whitesburg was the only other 2A EKY football school "survivor" until their consolidation a few yrs. ago.

 

This leaves only Prestonsburg as THE prototypical EKY 2A football power. Heck, the Blackcats won't even change classification in next year's new system...:lol:

Mercer is number one and I want it to stay that way. At least until playoff time. Then the number one can be decided one the field.

And you couldn't have asked for better weather at Danville! It rained off and on all game long. :thumb: And "Sink The Ship" was the slogan of the day(er, night...) for the Blackcat faithful.

Russell had only one loss that year. 20-19 to Ashland in OT. Didn't mean to take anything away from Pburg. That was a Russell team that many around hear thought might win a state championship.

If Mercer does win the state title, then people are going to say 'well they should have they are a 5a school'... and if they don't win it people will say 'well they should have, they're a 5a school'.... see the pattern?? **note-I know Mercer is 2a, but with them moving to 5a next year this is all people are talking about**

I thought all this was behind us. No one said a word several years ago when Bath County was playing in 2-A and their enrollment put them in 1-A. They were getting thier teeth kicked in every game and not one person on here said a word about it that I know of. Now look at Bath. Go Bath County.

 

Look at it this way. If Mercer gets knocked off. I don't think they will at this point. The team that does it will have something to talk about.

 

I still believe in playing the games to decide the number one team.
