NY Times: "North Carolina's Dominance Fails to Cover Cheating's Stain"

Featured Replies

You touched on my point. While it may be morally and ethically wrong, if it's not against any rule, what can the NCAA do? Curriculum and credit hours aren't in the NCAA's jurisdiction and they shouldn't be.

This is a curriculum issue. This is a school issue. This is an ethics issue. This is an accreditation issue. It's not an NCAA issue, IMO. At least not yet.

Unless advisors representing the school placed struggling athletes in these classes to keep them eligible for NCAA competition.

So here is my question.

How does the NCAA put Memphis on probation over Derrick Rose? It was a test to be admitted as an academic student. They accepted it. How is that academic event under the umbrella of the NCAA after the clearing house cleared him.

I find it so hypocritical that a fan base, UNC, has long derided UK's cheating past. Now they are spending millions to keep their cheating past from being punished. At least in 1989 the U.K. Administration of that time cooperated fully with the investigation and opened up all their damning records. The result was brutal, but deserved.

Here is my beef. The Carolina Way is maybe worse than The UK Way.

Final ramble. This team isn't part of the problem. This UNC team won the game on the court. My rancor is aimed at the past. At Dean Smith who seems more like Wooden now, looking the other way. At Roy, who I think ignored so he could keep some key early pieces on the court. At the hypocritical fan base that are just as much covered in the cess pool as everyone else.

The best part of this thread -- A UL fan talking , morals , Ethics and NCAA rules ... BAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAA .. Strippers and " professional escorts" in Minardi Hall anyone ?

This seems to be more of an issue for whatever organization accredits universities.

That's one of the first things I questioned back when all of this first came about. They won't take UNC's accreditation away, but seems like I haven't heard this discussed much at all.

Can you save that nonsense for a Louisville thread? This is actually a pretty good discussion about this UNC scandal and shouldn't be derailed.

I enjoyed the metaphor within the closing line:

He found Chapel Hill’s attitude toward student-athlete academics to be like an Easter egg: Beautiful and impressive to the outside world but without much life inside.”

The NCAA is a joke , they are not going to do anything to UNC . Fake classes , fake papers , Members of their title team who admitted not going to any classes ( Mccants) The whole thing is a scam but the NCAA is going to look away . They already have.

I think the NCAA wants to do something, hence the third NOA. But they are trying to find a legal process that allows them to do something because the truth is that this is a huge black eye to both them and UNC.

Wishful thinking

I agree that it's a curriculum issue, an institutional issue and an academic accreditation issue. I also believe it's an NCAA issue. They're not mutually exclusive.

If UNC athletes were taking fake classes, the players would not meet eligibility requirements which makes it an NCAA issue. Isn't that why NCAA vacated the Memphis Final four? Because DRose wasn't academically eligible?

If academic eligibility isn't an NCAA issue, then what is?

You said exactly what I was thinking.

(Only you said it faster. :lol2:)

Academic eligibility is... Determining what classes are real is not. That is the responsibility of the institution.

It's a dead horse. Everything needed to be known has been out there for a while. Continuing to harp on it will do nothing

It's the old story of putting things off long enough and people will forget. It seems to be working.

If you google "NCAA Mission", this is the quote you'll find: "Our purpose is to govern competition in a fair, safe, equitable and sportsmanlike manner, and to integrate intercollegiate athletics into higher education so that the educational experience of the student-athlete is paramount."

I hate to bring Louisville into this discussion, but stating that North Carolina's issues are beyond the scope of the NCAA is comparable to saying that Louisville's indiscretions are in the hands of law enforcement & not an NCAA issue. Yes, there are major institutional issues in Chapel Hill, and potentially major accreditation issues in Chapel Hill, but there are also major NCAA issues as well. Again, these issues are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they're interrelated.
