Books About Kentucky High School Basketball

Featured Replies

I have started reading Jarrett Van Meter's new book, How Sweet It Is, and am enjoying it. It will sit on my bookshelf with many other books about Kentucky high school basketball I have accumulated through the years. Some of my favorites:

March Madness: The Kentucky High School Basketball Tournament (1985). Mike Embry. Year-by-year summary of the state tournament from 1918-1984.

Shadows of the Past: A History of the Kentucky High School Athletic League (2006). Louis Stout. Informative book about basketball (and other sports) at black schools prior to the integration.

Legacies of Kentucky Mountain Basketball (2011). Harold M. Kelley. Wonderful book about basketball in the mountains in the mid-1950's, including pictures of many of the gyms from that era. I love the pictures.

All-Star Memories: A History of the Indianapolis Star's Indiana-Kentucky High School Basketball Series 1939-1989 (1989). Don M. Bates. Yearly review of the all-star series between Kentucky and Indiana.

Overtime Kids (2011). Don Miller. Tells the story of Carr Creek winning the state tournament in 1956.

When Cuba Conquered Kentucky (1999). Marianne Walker. Unfolds Cuba's 1951-52 season that culminated in a state championship.

I have plenty more, too many to list here.

My goal is to accumulate as many books on Kentucky high school basketball as possible. So my question is: what books about Kentucky high school basketball are out there? I think I have most of the ones that have come out in the last 10 years or so, but I have no idea what else may be out there, particularly any book that may have been published some time ago. Any help you can provide on any such books would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Danny Weddle wrote a book a few years ago. I think it is title, "How we play the game." or something like that.

Jeff Bridgeman's "Kentucky High School Basketball Encyclopedia."

Thanks. I should have identified that one. An absolutely essential resource.

this book is great.

I don't remember the name but someone spent a season with Scott County . Good read. Billy Hicks came across much better than he does on the sideline.

Ha! :lol2: I have a close friend who is a judge and he said one day he was looking at this book before his docket started. He wasn't really paying attention but it was very quiet in the courtroom. He looked up and realized he was about five minutes late to start court because his head was in this book and he wasn't paying attention!

@Mustang are you published yet? I want to know about Kenny Shields???

There was a book in the 70's that covered KY basketball from HS level and collegiate. Maybe Dave Kindred wrote it. Had a basketball textured cover.

Are these books available online?

Most are out of print and not available from the publisher, although I know some used copies of some of the books are available on amazon.
