Featured Replies

Anyone have recommendations on best rates and close hotels in the Lex. area this week? This Indiana boy would appreciate it.

If anyone needs help, I'll rent out my spare bedroom for $1,000 a night. I'll even have a "drink" with you.

That may be one of his few "nice" accommodation options this late in the game.

Haha I was kidding. I would let most BGPers stay at my house for free. But I live in Danville, which is a little south.

Hotels are fairly expensive this weekend. Check out an airbnb

A lot of kids stay at the Hilton. But don't stay up too late because Paul Blart Hotel Cop will be after you. I know from experience

We stay in Lexington frequently for UK games and have recently been staying at the Doubletree Inn on Richmond Road. It's within walking distance of a Hibachi restaurant and a wood fire pizza restaurant. A short Uber ride to/from Rupp!

I haven't been to the Sweet 16 since 2009, but I used to have pretty good luck with the La Quinta Inn on Stanton Way.

The price was better than a lot of places, and it was adequately clean and comfortable.

Do not stay in the nearby Knight's Inn for it is horrible, and I had a bed bug experience there. It's cheaper than La Quinta but awful.

La Quinta is right off the expressway next to a Cracker Barrel, and near a McDonalds, a Waffle House, and gas stations. In the past the tickets to the games would also have McDonald's coupons on the back of them, so that would be handy. No idea if they still do.

La Quinta has a free breakfast until about 9:00 a.m. It's decent enough to get you going in the morning, but the only protein option available other than milk is hard boiled eggs, which I used to slice up and make sandwiches with on toast.

It's about an 8 minute drive down Newtown Pike to get to Rupp.

Turn left onto 3rd Street from Newtown Pike, but carefully over the bumpy railroad tracks being mindful of people right on your bumper who are also turning and not knowing why you're slowing down. Timing with your turn is everything to avoid trouble like a wreak, or destroying your muffler.

It used to be $10 per session to park at Rupp which would add up to $20 a day for two sessions if you came and went. I never once parked in their lot and was always lucky enough to find something free within walking distance just east of Rupp in a couple of historic neighborhoods with cool old homes on either Short St. or 2nd St. not too far from Broadway.

Of course your chance of finding free parking increases it you arrive with much ample time before the event and beating the crowd.

After leaving it was also easier to get rolling rather than wait in line to get out of Rupp.

Nearby there is the Victorian Square vintage shopping mall, and depending on the weather, if you park where I suggested you can enter the mall from a back door, and then skywalk from there all the way to Rupp and the Mall that's associated with the arena.

You really don't have to be outside but a short distance from your car to that back door to the Victorian mall. The VS mall is comprised of a complex of old buildings gutted out to cleverly be a shopping mall, and sits directly across the street from Rupp.

If you get the time between sessions to walk around Lexington, treat yourself to their interesting Library on Main St. with the 5 balconied entrance with the world's largest ceiling to floor pendulating clock. If you're not afraid of heights, go up the 5th level to get closer look at the ceiling, and to look down from the balcony.

Also, over by Transylvania U near 3rd & Broadway is a cute quiet park called Gratz park for a chance to take a chill in a little green space surrounded by cool historical homes, and near the old Carnegie Library which is now a Center for Literacy and Learning. The architecture of the Carnegie is consistent with other Carnegie Libraries of that era. It's very similar to the one in Covington though it wasn't built with a theater attached.

It'll probably sound like I have a thing for libraries, but UK's main library is also pretty impressive. Head southwest on Broadway just a short bit to main campus for that one.

You could stay at the Hyatt connected to Rupp for $200 a night. Actually quite reasonable considering the quality of hotel and circumstances going on this weekend

Knights Inn is definitely OUT. They found someone deceased there with 2 others in the room that were going about their business like nothing was wrong. :wideyed:

Embassy Suites out near the interstate on Newtown Pike is going to be $200 a night unless you do some type of online reservation with some 3rd party company. I just checked their website & it said no rooms available.

Griffin Gate Marriott right across the road on Newtown is up around $300 a night for this weekend.

I would stay in Georgetown, LOL!

The La Quinta on Stanton Way that I was talking about in my other post is in the $65-$75 range with it being more in the $75 range on the weekend.

Also don't forget to use your AAA discount. I always select a non-smoking room to ensure that it is fresher. They have free Wi-Fi as well.

I'd sleep in my car before I would shell out that much jack just to lay my head down for the night.

Now this is a travel tip you can sink your teeth into!

Campbell House! Have to stay there at least once while in Lex.
