Just wondering how you have a guy who's never even been to a 10th Region Championship game above guys who have multiple Championships (Biggs and Russell).

Mike Code has had all of his success at small school. If you judge a coach's ability by how many regional championships they've won (especially at a small school), there's not many successful coaches out there. IMO Mike Code has done more with less. Brossart's players typically aren't the most athletic however their defense and ability to slow the game down has made some really good teams.

Josh cook is the best coming in as a new coach with kids who had their confidence crushed from the previous coach. He has built up their confidence, made them unselfish and play as a team. They trust him completely. There are only good things coming for the GRC team. Josh cook is the man to do it!!!

 

Agree. Took a team that was preseason around 8th to 3rd ranked in the region.

Hard to rank coaches IMO.

 

Matt Botner is another guy who has Nicholas County improving annually.

Very hard to rank coaches. Talent wins out most always. In my region the guy who I honestly think is the best coach has never won the region.

Terence Brooks is my choice...this is his 4th year at Paris... has I believe 80 wins...Won the district 3 years in a row...won 3 tournaments this year...All A State Champ...Took Ladyhounds to Sweet 16...his laid back demeanor drives me nuts at times...but it works!!

He's had a great season for sure!! To compare him to guys who've won region titles or traditionally been contenders is a tad bit premature don't ya think?

We wouldn't expect you to understand, there hasn't been a Region Title in Brooksville in quite some time.

My COY vote would be clouded by an undefined criteria. I personally would be challenged in considering where a team was when the coach arrived and where it is today vs. this years single season accomplishments vs. recent multi-year body of work vs. what he has accomplished this year solely with the cards he has had to play. My votes would be narrowed to Russell, Brooks, Cook and Kirk; with my pre-Regional COY vote going to Russell narrowly over Brooks. Post Regional vote might be flipped.

All 10 of the coaches listed are good.. just 3 or 4 are great... those guys have things called championships

Ouch that one hurt. 1955 was the last time when they won a 10th Region title. Brooksville/Bracken County only has 6 in school history. The point I was trying to make was coaches at smaller schools are unfairly judged on their coaching ability because they haven't won a regional title. That last All A school to win a 10th Region Title was Bishop Brossart in 2000, 17 years ago. And before that it was Maysville in 1989, 29 years ago.

 

Bracken County has won Region in 1925, 1926, 1939, 1940, 1944, and 1955. After that each year got tougher as schools consolidated and got bigger while the small town Polar Bears stayed the same.

 

I hope you understand the point I'm trying to make. Winning a regional title takes a good coach. But just because you don't have one on your resume doesn't make you a bad one. I'm sure if Mike Code or Terrance Brooks decided to coach at 4A Mason/Bourbon/Harrison or a 6A Clark/Montgomery/Campbell they would have regional titles as well. However they both have All A State Chanpionship titles which I think is equally if not more impressive.

I think you missed the point of my post. I never said an All A State Championship was better than an actual state championship. The last All A school to win a state championship was Painstville in 1996 with JR VanHoose. It is just not a realistic goal for small public schools anymore.

 

This is Mike Code's only year he's had a losing record in his 14 years at Bishop Brossart. You don't think he's ever been offered a coaching job at a bigger school with all the success he's had? If he was at a bigger school he would just as much, if not more success as the coaches on the top of your list.
