September 18, 200620 yr Should Tennessee make the switch to Vince Young? As a Titan fan, I had originally hoped that Young could sit and watch for a while, if not the whole season. But, that was before the Titans inexplicably decided that Billy Volek, the guy they were so high on the whole time he was McNair's backup, couldn't get them through one season while they waited for Vince to arrive. I'm still waiting on some explanation for that change of heart. How can you go from liking Volek so much, as they claimed, to signing Kerry Collins seconds before the season starts? OK, so I'm exaggerating. It was a few days, not seconds. But, KERRY COLLINS! for goodness sake. I mean, I think it benefits a young QB to sit as long as he can for the first season. Preferably the whole season (see Carson Palmer). But, when faced with watching Kerry Collins QB my beloved team for 16 games, I'm not sure I can handle it. With Collins, the Titans look like a team just going through the motions. At the least, I think Vince would energize the rest of the team. He's raw at the QB position for sure, but I'm also sure that he could make some things happen that no one else on that roster could. Two things about Vince that makes me want the switch to be made. 1) He is a leader. Period. He has that ability to fire up his teammates, make them believe and want to follow him. He proved that at Texas. 2) He doesn't strike me as the type of guy who would have his confidence beaten down because of some struggles (that will inevitably come along). So, I think he could handle being thrown in without damaging him in future years as has happened to some QB's. I think. But, why did Tennessee feel the need to sign Collins? You're pretty much saying right there that we don't have a chance. Why did they sour on Volek so quick? I never saw that one coming. I certainly don't think Billy Volek is a QB of the future for anyone, but he is at least as good as Collins. And better in Tennessee because he knows the offense and he has some history with the team. No one expected the Titans to contend for a playoff berth, so why couldn't they just ride the season out with Volek and get Young ready to lead the team next year?
September 18, 200620 yr Tenn flat dropped the ball! If they wanted him to sit and learn then they should have kept McNair. Volek obviously got comfortable thinking he was handed the starting job and they weren't happy about that. The problem is that if you are going to sign Collins then it should have been the day McNair left not a week before the season started! I mean how serious can you be about this year if you are going to sign a guy the week before the season starts then name him the starter on gameday? It is nice for backups to sit back and watch for a little bit ala Palmer. In Young's case I really don't know that he is going to learn that much watching Collins. Like you said he seems to have the confidence in himself that isn't going to deter with growing pains. I would play him now in hopes of possibly salvaging the season but more than anything to get him used to the speed of the game. Let him take his lumps while they are bad ala Troy Aikmen I say.
September 19, 200620 yr If you're a Titans fan, you're in for quite a few years of disappointment with VY as your qb. He will be, at best, an average NFL qb. He will be a poor man's Vick.
September 19, 200620 yr Tennessee should go ahead and start Young. The sole reason to sit him was for him to learn, problem is there is no one there for him to learn under, thus learn by experience. Get him in, he's probably right now the best they have anyway.
September 19, 200620 yr Author If you're a Titans fan, you're in for quite a few years of disappointment with VY as your qb. He will be, at best, an average NFL qb. He will be a poor man's Vick. I would honestly have preferred to see them draft Leinart, or D'Brickashaw Ferguson, but I think Vince will be better than an average QB. I think he's more of a leader than Vick, and I think he's a better performer under pressure. Two things that will separate him from Vick. I just prefer the prototype QB's. You could be right about Vince, but I don't think you are. I think he will establish himself as an elite QB in the NFL at some point. In any case, considering their current situation, I think Tennessee should go ahead and put him in the game and find out what they have. The Titans, IMO, aren't that far away from being a playoff team again. It basically depends on whether or not Vince Young can be an effective QB in the NFL. If he proves worthy of the #3 pick, then Tennessee should be a playoff contender as early as next year, but certainly in 2008.

Get him in, he's probably right now the best they have anyway. Billy Volek should've been this year's starter. He's proven in the past that he's a solid qb and can lead the team to victories. However, they just traded him to San Diego.
September 19, 200620 yr but I think Vince will be better than an average QB. I. I think most agree that Vick's running, while great, is a short-term strength and that his passing will have to improve in order to be a top qb. VY's passing is not anywhere near as good as Vick's so IMO he's got a long way to go to get to average.
September 19, 200620 yr Some thoughts from March By the way, I said it last winter and I'll say it again, if he ever makes the Pro Bowl as a QB I'll eat mud. Umm, 5wide, Leinart's ACL's are fine. Just kidding, heck, I agree wth you -- the Titans taking VY over Leinart will become more and more of a joke as time passes (and I don't think Leinart will be a great Pro either; but Brees-ish). :thumb:

September 19, 200620 yr If I'm the Titans, I'm paying close attention to ATL running spread option sets... Is it as effective if your backs are White / Brown / Henry, etc? Warrick Dunn may be the most under-rated player in the NFL, the threat of him cutting up a defense makes that spread option even more lethal.

I agree they would need to find a shiftier back to go this route in the offseason, but if it works for ATL, it would be something to look into IMO...
September 20, 200620 yr I agree they would need to find a shiftier back to go this route in the offseason, but if it works for ATL, it would be something to look into IMO... It won't work if you don't establish some kind of a passing game. And I dont think Tenn has that yet.
