February 20, 20179 yr Charismatic, the 1999 Horse of the Year when he won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, died on Sunday, according to a statement released by the Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Center in Georgetown, Ky. Charismatic had been in retirement at Old Friends since December. He previously stood at stud in Kentucky and Japan. The cause of Charismatic’s death was not immediately known. Charismatic, 21, was found dead on Sunday morning, according to Old Friends president Michael Blowen. “Right now, everyone is pretty much inconsolable,” Blowen said in a statement. “Last night, at 6:30, he was fine. He was a really tough horse and he deserved a much longer retirement.”

Some notable data points....Secretariat died at 19 of laminitis (euthanized), Seabiscuit died at 13 of a heart attack, Storm Cat died at 30 of advanced age, Snowman died at 26 of kidney failure (euthanized). I read where Charismatic fractured his pelvis. Storm Cat
