State Senate: Bill encourages starting school later in the summer

Featured Replies

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky Senate has passed legislation that offers an incentive for school districts to voluntarily push back the start of the school year to late August.

Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer says the trend toward earlier starting school dates has hurt tourism. He also says students don't learn as well when it's so hot.

Some Kentucky school districts start classes in early August.

Under the bill that passed Thursday, districts that don't resume classes at least until the Monday closest to Aug. 26 would not have to meet the state's 170-day requirement.

Those districts would still have to meet the state-mandated minimum of 1,062 hours.

Thayer's bill heads to the House. House Speaker Jeff Hoover says he hasn't reviewed it but likes that it would be voluntary.

7.5 hours of instruction per day would mean that systems could finish the school year in 142 instruction days instead of the current 170.

If you go to less days, classified staff such as bus drivers, cafeteria, instructional aides, basically non salaried personnel will lose salary. Let's say a school chooses to go 150 days, that is 20 days less monet around 12 % I think. That's a chunk of change for a low paid person anyway.

Next will be changing salaried positions pay, it's coming just wait. There is this perception that teachers are overpaid, surely you've heard it. Very few will do this. Some start later anyway.

Falls right inline with my belief that money is more important than people.

Bill out there today that teachers don't have to complete at Rank II. Basically encouraging new teachers not to extended their education. Fewer highly educated teachers.

Fed and State admins are silently undermining public education.

I've never heard that Teachers were overpaid and I personally don't think that they are.

Unfortunately, I hear it all the time.

Back in the day, school started on the day after Labor Day and ran through the second week of June.

But that was in Maryland.

Not so silently. Loud and clear.

The perceived value of public education is sinking like a stone as we speak.

Correct. But, I don't think education policy should be based on school employees paychecks.

How is less school a good idea?

We always seemed to start the Wednesday before Labor Day and finished right around Memorial Day, when I was younger. End of the year was always determined by how many snow days we had to make up.

That's how it was next door in Delaware. They have moved the start date up some, but still aren't starting until the last few days of August.
