Unfortunately, I hear it all the time.

 

Even where you're from (a highly paid district in our area), that is insane. Teachers are paid about half of what they're worth.

Correct. But, I don't think education policy should be based on school employees paychecks.

 

 

Nor do I on some Tourism board's lobbying or, more than likely, a few legislatures who don't like things different than when they were kids.

 

The starting date is really no big deal, the cutting of days is, first educationally for kids, second less $$ for some employees when schools are the largest employers in the county, and finally trying to appeal some lobby group.

And if one uses the argument that they get summers off, then one doesn't know too many teachers: pack up room after school year, attend trainings, attend meetings, unpack and stage room....reality is quite different.

You would be surprised how many times I have heard it over my years in education. Total lack of understanding.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky Senate has passed legislation that offers an incentive for school districts to voluntarily push back the start of the school year to late August.

 

Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer says the trend toward earlier starting school dates has hurt tourism. He also says students don't learn as well when it's so hot.

 

Some Kentucky school districts start classes in early August.

 

Under the bill that passed Thursday, districts that don't resume classes at least until the Monday closest to Aug. 26 would not have to meet the state's 170-day requirement.

 

Those districts would still have to meet the state-mandated minimum of 1,062 hours.

 

Thayer's bill heads to the House. House Speaker Jeff Hoover says he hasn't reviewed it but likes that it would be voluntary.

Bolded is all I needed to see. Most useless person in Frankfort. This is dumb. Most of these districts that start early, due so because they miss 15 to 20 days for weather during the year. (ok so not this year.) My wifes school is one of them. They start second Wednesday of August every year, and still get out in June.

 

Ironic that the guy who says it has "Hurt Tourism" in Kentucky is the same guy that initially blocked a road improvement grant for the ARK. Hmmmm.

I like the idea of letting kids be kids. Give them longer summers. I'm only 33 and the summers are much shorter than when I was in school.

Not for bus drivers and cafeteria workers. You cut days you cut them out. Bus drivers, although paid hourly, only drive the days kids are in school, etc. It would affect some custodial staff. It won't be long until the top realizes teachers aren't working as many days and cut their salaries through funding. The hours are minimum, most school districts go much more than that.

So you are angry they possibly found a way to run schools more efficently and cost effective? This happens every day in the private sector. It is lawmakers job to save the tax payer money if possible. If kids are in the classroom for the same amount of time I have no problem.

Public and private are different, that's the issue some want to make public and private the same, it's not or superintendents of 10,000 student districts would make millions with super umbrella buy outs. I would argue the problem with the public sector for to long is it has been ran inefficiently and with to much bureaucracy. Tax payers need to hold politicians feet to fire like stock holders do with private companies.

I'm not sure what tests you're talking about. Most grades are tested yearly in certain subjects.

I am speculating your wife's school chooses these tests.
