President Trump's Labor Nominee Admits to Having Employed Undocumented Worker

Featured Replies

This story has been out for a little while now, and I was hoping we could actually have constructive, reasonable debate.

The gist of the story is that Andrew Puzder, who owns the Hardees and Carl Jr. brands, at one point had employed an undocumented worker in his home without his knowledge of the employees status. Once he became aware, he fired the employee and paid the necessary taxes, filled the paperwork etc., as well as helped the worker gain legal status.

The question I have, that I think is worthy of debate, is whether something like this should exclude an individual from serving? If it's an honest mistake, and one that was corrected when discovered, I have a hard time holding it against him. However, I am a bit skeptical how someone in his position wouldn't have discovered it from the beginning?

Could a mod please correct the misspelling in the thread title? Thanks!

Easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission.

I would like to know more facts about this before forming an opinion. Specifically whether or not he did anything to verify the status of the worker prior to hiring them, was any deception involved etc. Also how long ago did this discovery of the undocumented worker, subsequent firing, and assistance to help her become legal occur. Was it something happened recently in efforts to "clean his own house" prior to the nomination hearing or was it something that happened some time ago, prior to any thought of this political appointment.

That being said, I'm willing to give this guy the benefit of the doubt. I like his style. I can't think of a better way for somebody to try to sell me a cheeseburger than the method he uses. Always gets my attention.

Well illegal is illegal. Send her back. He should resign his appointment.

On the same lines: Ref, should businesses and individuals be held accountable for hiring illegals?

If she was working solely for them - not through a contractor or angency - and especially if she was 'live in' - then this could be a problem.

And if they were paying her in cash...

Does sound sketchy on the surface. Turning everyone in after 'years' may mean the IRS was closing in or someone was about rat the whole deal out.

If you are the direct employer - then you have a responsbility.

Main reason why so many are here, and it's not even close.

Right. I would like to see some accountability for those that hand out the cash.

And as soon as the companies start firing illegals then the hue and cry of how mean and heartless they are starts. No way die hard liberals would let that opportunity to stick it to the man pass.

Businesses absolutely, individuals get a "Little" leeway in that it may be harder for them to verify. Businesses caught hiring illegals need to have the hammer dropped on them.

Agreed

I'm a liberal, and I say Fire em. Opportunity is why these people are here. Take it away and they will go home.

This reminds me of those who want to punish drug users at the same level of drug dealers.

Soros would have demonstrators by the bus load at the headquarters of any company that started mass terminations of illegals. Personally I'm all for fire 'em, detain 'em and deport 'em.

Maybe he would, but will the rich fire the cheap labor?
