UNC's Athletic Directors thoughts on the academic scandal

Featured Replies

The whole thing is a joke. UNC should be put on some probation by the accrediting organization they are a part of, or potentially worse.

I honestly don't know the punishment the athletic department should receive, but to act like it isn't an NCAA issue is ridiculous.

Strip UNC of all wins from the time the fake classes started until they finally stopped the fake classes period. Vacate all Championships that occured during the same time frame and close the case. Move on to the next investigation wherever that will be. Death penalty is too lenient to me, the university should have their accreditation stripped also.

My understanding is that the Association of American Universities is running into the same lawyers as the NCAA is. The AAU is looking into kicking them out of that exclusive club, not unprecedented as Syracuse and Nebraska have lost their memberships, but the same delay tactics are being employed on them.

The NCAA is punishing them as we speak. Dragging this thing out is killing their recruiting. Go ahead and give Roy a suspension and call it a day. If it's taking this long then chances are they're fishing for stuff now.

I know the NCAA doesn't like to strip Div-1 Titles, but this is a case where Basketball (M&W), Field Hockey and Soccer (M&W) won titles during the period of academic fraud they very well could/should lose those titles.

Women's Soccer won at least 10 and as many as 12 titles during that span depending on exactly when it all started...they are the UCLA (M) or UConn (W) of soccer.

They're aren't tabbed the University of National Champs for no reason

Memphis had their final four season taken away from them for "Academic Fraud" so how anyone with half a brain can even try to say UNC's investigation has nothing to do with NCAA athletics and shouldn't affect the athletics dept at all is a joke and a sham.

If Memphis had their entire season stripped from the record books for a possible SAT test that may not have been legit then 18 years of non legit classes should wipe out 18 years of Basketball and Football seasons.

I get how the AD would feel about it. Anybody know what the school President has said?

Maryland president Wallace Loh says he would expect North Carolina to get the "death penalty" over the academic allegations that have hung over the athletic program since 2010.

Lethal Injection or maybe firing squad.

Are you sure you are being strict enough? Why not castrate Ole'Roy while your at it?

Actually I'm simply using what the NCAA has already done when it comes

to academic fraud. So apparently I'm just toeing the line already set.

You do realize it wasn't just "Ole Roy". This started during Dean Smiths tenure.

Saw this article on that site. Thought it really makes an interesting statement that academic counselors who were responsible for advising student athletes steered athletes in this direction knowing how easy the classes were. Is that not a problem of control?

One thing people need to stop saying about the North Carolina scandal

I said it befor and I will

say it again. If Memphis had to vacate their entire final four season for something that was never proved nor was nearly as bad of a academic fraud case as this is then there is no way that anything less than vacating every season of UNC basketball and football during this time period should even be considered.

I was listening to Jay Bilas defending his tweets that SEC Commish Sankey (?) should be recused from the investigation of UNC.

His argument is that there is a conflict of interest. My question is: Who decides who has a conflict of interest in such matters? There has to be a committee made up of someone from NCAA schools, can't a conflict of interest be found in all sorts of people in any NCAA investigation?

The NCAA states that the "Committee on Infractions:"

The Division I Committee on Infractions (COI) is an independent administrative body charged with deciding infractions cases involving NCAA member institutions and their employees. Each committee is comprised of individuals serving as volunteers from NCAA member institutions and conferences and individuals from the general public who have legal training. As authorized by the bylaws, the COI has authority to address prehearing procedural matters, set and conduct hearings or reviews, find facts, conclude violations of NCAA legislation, prescribe appropriate penalties and monitor institutions on probation to ensure compliance with penalties and terms of probation, as well as conduct follow-up proceedings as may be necessary. The committee is also charged with hearing the appeals of individuals subject to a show-cause order in Level III cases, as well as other duties as authorized by the bylaws.

In accordance with NCAA Bylaw 19.3.1, the COI membership shall include, where reasonably possible: current or former presidents, chancellors, directors of athletics; former coaches; representatives from conference offices; faculty/staff; athletics administrators with compliance experience; and general public members who have formal legal training but who are not associated with a collegiate institution, conference, or professional or similar sports organization and who do not represent coaches or athletes in any way.

Is there anything that is being violated here by his presence?
