January 25, 20179 yr I saw in the paper today that 418 horses were nominated for the Triple Crown. I wondered if a horse race can end in a tie? Obviously this scenario is a long shot, but if two horses tied at the Kentucky Derby, then one proceeds to win the Preakness and Belmont, is it a Triple Crown champ? If one horse wins the Derby and Preakness then tied in the Belmont, is that a Triple Crown? Certainly the likelihood of this happening is less than zero, but I do wonder if the rule book covers it.

January 25, 20179 yr Okay guys, thanks! :thumb: Now, what about my Triple Crown part of the question? Yes, they are the winner of all 3 races.
January 26, 20179 yr Yes, dead heat. If you bet on either horse, you still win I believe the win and place purses are added together and then split 50/50.
January 26, 20179 yr GRINDSTONE (1996 KY DERBY) For Triple Crown winning trainer Bob Baffert, this still stands as his toughest loss. Although Unbridled’s Song was the 7-2 favorite and leading, it was Baffert’s Cavonnier who took over with a quarter-mile to go. Meanwhile, Grindstone, under Jerry Bailey, was making a huge move from 15th place and by the time they flashed by the finish line, it was too close to call between trainer D. Wayne Lukas’ Grindstone and Cavonnier. Baffert thought he won. Lukas wasn’t sure. The photo finish review took a long time. Several minutes. The nod went to Grindstone. Five days later, the colt was retired with an injury.
