Dakota Access pipeline has first leak before it's fully operational | US news | The Guardian The most troubling part of the article - to me - is this: Brian Walsh, an environmental scientist with the South Dakota department of environment and natural resources, said the spill was relatively minor and was caused by a mechanical failure at a surge pump. “It’s not uncommon to have a small release at a pump station,” he said, adding that the company responded immediately and cleaned up the liquid petroleum.

Not that any amount is safe to spill, but 84 gallons is practically nothing, and it occurred at a pump station within a containment area. I am sure faux outrage will come about it though.
