A True Third Party needs to build a ground roots and start at the state levels getting people elected to statehouses and to congress. Then they need to have a true primary season with numerous candidates discussing the issues through the primary season, followed by a nominating convention. Anything less and they will continue to be marginalized by the press and the voters. A third party will need to stake out ground in both parties platforms, can't be a Democrats Light or Republicans Light party. They need to take a stand and take key positions away from both parties.

I liked a lot of what they stood for and they seemed like good fellas but, geez, when Gary finally got in front of the cameras he was really bad. It was clear he wasn't the guy. His VP pick was much, much better.

Thats an interesting thought. It would never work in Kentucky with how tied both parties are to our local elections. You can't have a primary season without primary voters. People aren't switching their party here.

January 23, 20179 yr Thats an interesting thought. It would never work in Kentucky with how tied both parties are to our local elections. You can't have a primary season without primary voters. People aren't switching their party here. Then only a handful of Kentuckians would be selecting their parties candidate. There are plenty in both parties that would leave if there was a viable option and even if it was only a few thousand to begin with, they could still select their candidate. There are currently 236,000 +/- people registered as "Other", those folks would be the low hanging fruit for a new party.

It is hard to understand how so many people confused two liberal Republicans for libertarians that they became the Libertarian Party ticket. When Bill Clinton nominated Weld to be Ambassador to Mexico in 1997, Sen. Jesse Helms, a fellow Republican, single-handedly blocked Helms' appointment. When the Libertarian Party stops nominating big government liberals to run on its ticket, then I will begin taking the party seriously. If the party focused on personal and economic liberty, then they would find plenty of common ground with conservatives like me. As it stands now, the party seems to be run by crackpots who believe that legalizing recreational drugs is the only issue facing this country that really matters.

I like Weld(no surprise) but you're right, an odd pair for the Libertarian ticket. I never felt like Weld seemed very comfortable at all as part of that ticket. I think he would have been much more comfortable as Hillary's running mate.
January 23, 20179 yr I have been a registered Democrat; I have been a registered Republican and still am one currently. I have never voted straight party as either. I am currently debating whether to switch again to Libertarian. I voted for DJT over HRC but the fact that these two were the best that both parties could come up with left a bad taste in my mouth for either party; especially my own.
