Randy Parker
I think most of the world would unite if we were attacked by, say, the Getslowians. Perhaps a global pandemic of some kind might also result in some semblance of unity.

Bluegrasscard
Since the question at hand has a political slant to it the basics of politics has to be the foundation of any answer. Peoples and political/religious structures and nation-states come 'together' when it is viewed as required action of....self-interest. There is individual self-interest, organizational self interest and nation-state self-interest. An outside/world-wide threat (hostile aliens or zombies) would force putting aside 'smaller' issues to 'unite'. But only until the threat was addressed. After the threat is gone the uniting ends it seems. As an example, US and Russia during, then after WWII. So would such a world-wide threat and action drive an ongoing, forever united-ness across the globe? Probably not. We seem to be programmed for competative self-interest at all levels - individuals, religions, nations, business, political-power circles. There seems to always be 'competition' even in the most 'united' functions. It does seem in our genes. Maybe that is why the aliens still just treat us like a prison planet. Maybe our competiveness is entertainment to them.
WhoozYoDaddy
No, an alien attack would likely just find different allied nations attempting to court favor from the aliens in an attempt to forge a new alliance with them. It would also result in much different approaches to solving the problem within countries. Pacifists would remain pacifists and hawks would fight back, resulting in conflict on two fronts, within and from outside.

doomer
"9-11" was viewed by most as an attack on the US. Much of the world despises America. What if the attack was directed towards the entire planet by some alien entity? Much of the world is jealous of America.

plantmanky
Watch Independence Day. It brought all together and I'm sure it would be the same. Are you kidding? Alien Lives Matter would have a field day if we tried to attack them.
