Inbounding Question

When inbounding a ball, the player has 5 seconds to get the ball to the receiving player, correct?

If a player rolls the ball down the court to keep the clock from starting, does the 5 second count continue until the receiving player touches the ball?

5 seconds to "release" the ball

No. You have 5 seconds to put the ball in play. If the ball is rolled in, it is considered in play.

Does the 10 second to cross half court start when the ball is in play or when another player touches the ball?

10 second count starts when an offensive player has control of the ball in the back court.

Control or just makes contact?

Control or just makes contact?

I think it's control but I'm not 100% certain.

I believe it would be contact as that is when clock officially starts (if dead ball).

Once the team possesses, or has control, they have until a count of 10 to get into frontcourt. A tip or touch doesn't necessarily demonstrate control...we are looking for team control. If you watch a backcourt count you will find great variation amongst officials, some slower, some faster. Compare that to time expired on the game clock and you can see why it is a 10 "count" not necessarily 10 "game seconds"

Remember that the logic used for the throw-in (i.e. the count ends at release) does not apply to the issue of the 10-second rule. The 10-second count does not end until the ball touches either the floor in the front court or touches a player who is in the front couret. So a pass released at 9 that travels a long way but doesn't touch before 10 is a violation.

I want to be there when that explanation happens....

@Clyde so on the 5 count, If you throw the ball in the air at 4.5 and no one touches it til after 5 seconds, it's a turnover?

No because ball was released before 5 seconds I believe.

No because ball was released before 5 seconds I believe.

This is correct. As long as it doesn't hit anything overhead.
