Greatest American Bands of All-Time?

Featured Replies

In the Chicago documentary on CNN, someone mentioned that any list of the greatest American bands would have to include the Beach Boys, the Eagles, and Chicago.

Who would make your top 3 list as the greatest American bands of all-time?

1. ???

2. ???

3. ???

My list...

KISS - because they changed the way artists viewed live performances/touring... they also changed the landscape of merchandising for musical acts

Van Halen - because Eddie influenced so many generations of guitar players

And my "out of the box" pick... Creedence Clearwater Revival - because Fogerty and the gang wrote more great hit songs and recorded more studio albums in a short period of time than almost anyone I can think of... I think they did 7 or 8 albums in a 5 year career or something crazy like that...

Aerosmith

Creedence Clearwater Revival

The Doors (or possibly The Allman Brothers Band)

While they aren't in my top three by any stretch of the imagination, they were an American band.

It's hard to narrow it to three but my list would have to include

Chicago , Jefferson Airplane/Starship , The Eagles , Boston. Make one of them 3a and the other 3b.

Aerosmith

Creedence Clearwater Revival

The Doors (or possibly The Allman Brothers Band)

I love The Doors pick... they're my 4th, but more like a 3b I guess

The Ramones

Nirvana

REM

Y'all are OLD.

Unfortunately, true. :) Of course, we did grow up in the best era for music.

A joy the younger folks could never hope to realize. ;)

Technically VH is not an American band. Brothers were born in Netherlands. They grew up in Cali though so they are considered an American band. And a darn good one at that.

Also I may be old but REM would be at the very top on my list of the worst bands ever.

And Gene Simmons was born in Israel, both bands started here and are as American as they come.

The Eagles

Bruce Springsteen/E Street Band

The Allman Brothers
