What's your beef with hate crime laws?

This piece by Shaun King may only relate to one comment made in this thread, but it's a different angle.

A NYDaily.com article

In my own words:

We're really going to read about the lowlifes being detained and STILL demand outrage? And while saying this isn't a hate crime may sound out of left field, is Lemon wrong to wonder what kind of parenting the assaultants received prior to the attack?

I know this is the controversial thread, but still, i can't comment on my opinions of this.

I just don't think they are necessary. If someone kills someone, that is a crime so punish them for THE CRIME, not for the reason they committed the crime. Same with kidnapping or the multiple crimes committed in this story. They should go to jail for 20 plus years just for what they did, not because the kid they abused is white or a Trump supporter. Same if a white guy shoots a black guy. He should go to jail for shooting the guy not because the guy is black. JMO...

A crime is a crime. I don't think motivatiom matters in sentencing. If I murder you Inshould go to jail period.

I don't like hate crime laws. But I have no problem with this mindset if it is used across racial lines. Which I doubt Shaun King would do.

But by the definition of the law this is a no brainer hate crime.

I was not even thinking hate crime when I read it. I was thinking that these are evil people with no souls. I was thinking of how important it is for people to "one up" others and get more recognition on social media.

I was thinking how this hits too close to home.

All crimes are hate crimes in my book, never heard of a crime done out of love.

That could have been Obamas son. Wonder if he will comment on this.

Obama said it was a despicable hate crime when he spoke on it.
