The Return of the Underhanded Free Throw

Featured Replies

Man I loved watching that dude play at UofL.

As for his free throws, they're a triumph of rational thinking. He was a rotten free throw shooter, so he tried something else and it worked... so he kept doing it. What an amazing concept.

Glad he stuck to it.

I'm not sure there was one time he hit two "regular" free throws in a row at UofL.

Pride is the only reason other players haven't gone to the underhanded free throw.

Every other shot taken in a game is overhanded. I find it sad if one can sink the overhand version at a decent %. You would have to practice underhand a lot in order to be good at it. Why not work on the overhand version which helps all of your game shot situations?

I'm not sure how you could find any negative in the situation if it dramatically improved ones free throw percentage...

For some I do not think it is a matter of practice, just mental. And how many non-jump shooting set shots do guys take unimpeded from 15 ft. during a game? Just FTs.

I find it sad one can't improve over hand shots to the point they have to reinvent the way they normally shoot a ball. A kid takes thousands upon thousands of shots over hand. Zero underhand shots after the age of 4.

The mental part is interesting. The point of non jumping shots should mean the foul shot is easier.

I played horse over the weekend and tried a few granny shots.

You must be a great free throw shooter...

Add to that, you must have just been great at everything you've ever done the first time around and never had to tweak anything. What's that like?

Under your same line of thinking, years ago in the NBA Hal Greer used to shoot jumpers for his FT's.

Dude never shoots from more than 5 feet from the rim.

I do not know the science of it all, but my guess is a "granny shot" gives one the best chance of hitting any (set) shot. Both hands are on the ball in an equal capacity. You don't play corn hole by throwing the bags like a jump shot or free throw. You find a way to loft it as gently as possible.
