Berkmar (GA) 83 Bowling Green 66

Berkmar High School is a Gwinnett County public school. Enrollment in the high school is close to 3500, they have really large HS in Gwinnett County.

Al Durham for Berkmar has committed to play for Indiana next year.

With the talent BG has I figured it would a closer score.. It looks like Lee (the team who lost to Dunbar) played Berkmar pretty close.

Crazy how much talent is in that state.

just goes to show, when ppl on here start talking about all the high D1 and D1 talent they seem to be seeing in watching KY HS games...........mid-major at best and D2, NAIA talent is a better description for most, not all of KY best ranked players. And that is not knocking the highest level kids in KY, its more a knock on the ppl trying to elevate them to a level they aren't.

The best Ky kids continually go up against the best kids in Georgia in the spring and summer. I'm sure that Peyton Broughton, David Johnson, Tavin Lovan, Andrew Taylor etc have all played Atlanta Celtics, Georgia Stars, Atlanta Xpress, etc over their AAU seasons.

I do take your point about unrealistic talent evaluation though. Take some kid getting 30 points per game in the mountains and drop him in suburban Atlanta and he's a JV player and not a "D1 prospect".

I was at the game (one of my first BG basketball games in a long while) and Beckmar was on FIRE from 3. They hit 8 threes in the first quarter and a half.

As Rez said, Beckmars guards were lightning quick and made the BG offense uncomfortable. BG had a big advantage down low, but I thought they went away from that WAY too early and just started jackin 3s and it got out of hand. Plus they haven't been in this situation alot and don't think they handled being down again like this well. BUT it should help them immensely going forward. Not taking anything away from Beckmar who has an excellent team, but if they don't hit like 8 3s in a row I think BG would have stayed in the game much longer.

I would say there's no question in that, as a team that is deficient size-wise is going to have to hit shots to overcome that. When a team consistently hits outside, that's going to require an adjustment, and then it will soften up the lanes for the other team to drive. Berkmar only shot 4 threes in the entire second half, because by that point they didn't have to. Still, they shot 60% from inside the arc as well.

I'll also say, to be fair, I think some of the teams that BG has buried this year would have stayed in the game longer if the Purples hadn't hit an abnormally high percentage of their threes so far. In their first four games Bowling Green shot 51.3% from three (41/80). After the Doss game, it was still 49% (51/104). When Bowling Green shoots that from three, there is almost no hope for any of their opponents, because they simply have to do what they can to limit drives to the basket and shots inside by their bigs. They won't be able to stop that all the way, but they have to try. If you don't, Bowling Green will simply cut you to death with inside shots. I don't think it's a coincidence that their three closest games have come when they did not shoot well from the perimeter (Greenwood - 3/12 [25%], Ballard - 4/11 [36%], Berkmark - 4/17 [24%]). That's both because those may have been empty possessions but also because they regressed to a more realistic performance from the perimeter, which meant teams didn't have to extend as much on D to cover it.

The Purples are all the way down to 44.7% from three (59/132) after the last two games. It's still 5% higher than they shot from three last season, and just two years ago they shot 31%.

What is interesting, talking to a friend in Ga, Berkmar isn't even considered a top 20 team in Ga. They got trounced by the no. 1 team (Newton).

Maybe BG had an off night and Berkmar their best.

AJC #1 team in big school(Norcross) beat them by 8.

From a pure skill standpoint, Kentucky's best can usually play with almost any other high level kid around, based on what I've seen over the years on the AAU circuit...it is the overall athleticism and physical maturity that generally separates those other high level kids from what we see here in KY.

The top kids in ky can play with other states kids. Trinity starting guard Justin Powell is only a freshman and is also the starting point guard for top ranked Atlanta Celtics 14u aau team.

There's no question there are always individuals who can hang on the national level. We can put together AAU teams that can compete at a national level. We can't always field high school teams capable of competing on a national level. States like Georgia and Ohio with larger metropolitan areas with much bigger schools will always have more resources to field dominant teams than us here in KY. Plus when we have great teams like that in KY we all complain about how that team was put together so..............
