The slant against the Beechwood Tigers is based on their past history, when they earned a reputation as a NKAC Division II doormat for years after upgrading from the security of Division III where they dominated (but did not improve).

Why is everyone acting like Beechwood isn't a very good team?

 

Beechwood isn't a great team but to their credit they have an identity and they are bought in. It's amazing how powerful that combination can be - Beechwood will be a tough out come tournament time because they will have a season's worth of experience enforcing their tempo and style of play on opponents who aren't suited to win that type of game.

No mention of PG Toebbe in this game thread. Did he play? I was very impressed the two times I saw him last year.

Ben Toebbe did play. He had 7 points. He want being guarded tight. I talked to Ben after the game and PC asst coach told him their game plan was to shut him dome and make someone else beat them, and Owen Alcorn did that with a career high 20. Toebbe about 30 minutes of the game

Toebbe just had an off night in my opinion. Ben is a good player but his shot just wasn't falling last night.

Congrats to the Tigers on a hard fought win. Forced PC to play their style of ball and it worked to Beechwood's advantage. Cats did an excellent job on Toebbe, but the Alcorn kid stepped up. He was able to find holes in the Pendleton press and knock down some shots.

 

Pendleton cuts the lead from 10 to 1 with about 2 minutes to play when the first of 2 technical fouls are called on Senior Mason Dennie. Dennie knocked away a pass, and while trying to retrieve the ball, was shoulder checked by a Beechwood player (not dirty at all, just going for the ball, but was a foul). Nothing gets called and Beechwood was awarded the ball. Couldn't tell WHAT was said, but Dennie said something and was given the technical. The official was 10 feet away, but must've had rabbit ears. Still, you have to expect more poise from your senior at that time. Alcorn hits both to push it to 3. Next possession, following a PC miss, a foul is committed to stop the clock. As they're walking to the FT line, Dennie is assessed a 2nd technical foul. As it was explained to Coach Belcher, and I was sitting right there, so I heard it myself, Dennie "shook his head at him". Tobbe hits both his Ft on the personal, and Alcorn hits 1-2 FT on the technical to get to the final margin of 6.

 

Definitely affected the outcome of the game. The 1st T? inexcusable. The 2nd one? A little much, don't you say? I'm not saying it cost PC the game, because they'd still be down 5 with 30 seconds or so to play, but it changed things.

 

Sorry I didn't get to see my buddy @statman, and would've loved to have met some others as well. S/O to Beechwood's AD for helping us out with a power strip when my broadcast partner failed to bring one. Also HUGE S/O to Beechwood's PA guy for absolutely killing it on the music all night!

I was also quite impressed with the sizeable, energetic student section, which came early and stayed late, when the Mustangs were in the house last week.

A fourth of the way through the season, Beechwood is 5-2 with a close 4 point loss at Dixie one of the losses. Coach Goetz is getting it done and building a program. A LOT of talent in the younger ranks, kids who are basketball focused. Keep it rolling Tigers!

I was surprised than when Allen hit a 3 with 11 seconds left in the game down 6, why Coach Belcher didn't use one of his last 2 timeouts right away.

The technical foul(s) did pretty much end the game. P.C. was on a run and was down by 1 when the 1st T was called. 2 free throws and the ball, after a P.C. foul, the same ref calls another T which gave Beechwood 4 shots and the ball. I wish the ref would have let the players decide the game. That's just my unbiased opinion. Beechwood has a nice little team, they won't get to Rupp but they might possibly make it to NKU for the region.

And my thoughts on Allen were he's obviously the most talented kid on P.C. (and on the floor last night), but he was passive and didn't take over the game like I expect a top 5 or 6 soph (in the state) to do. I'm sure the P.C. community loves watching him but I could deff see him @ a prep school or going to another team where he gets some help during a game and some others to make him better in practice.

I'll give Allen and P.C. another shot vs Collins next week @ Henry County

The Beechwood teams is balanced in scoring.

Only one in double figures and five others score between 5-10 points. All five have had atleast one game in double digits.
