One report today has said over 700 structures have been destroyed. A Fire Chief they were talking to said he had been up on the mountian near Ober Gatlinburg and said it is devastating what has happened up there.

Looking at where some of the confirmed destruction is, there are locations on all sides of Gatlinburg that have been destroyed.

 

There is a resort between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge that was pretty much completely destroyed.

Is Hillbilly Golf gone? I've heard conflicting reports. They put a mountain rollercoaster near it recently I believe. I'll miss The Alamo, good steak.

These fires have made me very sad. I love Gatlinburg.

Taking man out of the equation, this probably will be good for the woodland areas inpacted. After some initial erosion, regrowth over the next couple of seasons will bring everything back to life.

I read a story about a guy who went outside to check on the fire situation. He and his son then got in their car to check out how bad it was down the road leaving his wife and daughters at his house or cabin. He never made it back because the fire escalated so quickly he was not able/permitted to get back. He's still trying to find his wife and daughters.

 

If you know what the situation is, how do you not put EVERYONE in the car to go check just in case?

That's a tough one. My understanding is the fire changed very quickly due to the wind. Maybe at the time there were no fires near the house and they actually thought it would be safer there than out on a road near a fire (the fire and falling debris). Hope the wife and daughter made it to safety and will be found alive.
