Q&A | Fern Creek's Kyree Hawkins

 

 

The first time Kyree Hawkins touched a football in an organized game, he scored a touchdown.

 

That was in the seventh grade. Five years later the Fern Creek senior running back still has the same objective.

 

“(Scoring a TD), that’s my goal every time I touch the ball,” Hawkins said.

 

He still does it pretty regularly.

 

The 5-foot-1, 200-pounder is one of the top scorers in Class 5-A with 144 points – 12 per game – for Fern Creek (10-2), which will host Covington Catholic (9-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the 5-A quarterfinals.

 

This season he’s tallied 24 touchdowns (18 rushing, five receiving, one return). In addition to leading the Tigers in rushing (1,155 yards on only 102 carries), the jack-of-all-trades also tops the team in receiving yards (215). He’s also tied for the top spot in fumble recoveries (two) while also recording 66 tackles on defense, where he plays linebacker.

 

Q: How and when did you start playing football?

 

A: I started playing (in the seventh grade) when I moved in with my aunt. I realized that I had the ability to play for a long time, but when I was living with my mother she wouldn’t let me play because she thought it was a dangerous sport. Then, when I moved in with my aunt, she told me I should try playing football. I tried it and when I first touched the ball I scored and I was like, ”Oh, this is the sport for me.”

 

Q: What was the play you scored on?

 

A: A sweep. It was about 80 or 90 yards.

 

Q: What do you like about football?

 

A: I like building relationships with my teammates, getting to know them … and helping people become better players and students in the classroom.

 

Q: What are the team goals for this season?

 

A: Have a GPA of 3.0 and reach the championship.

Covington Catholic: Sophomore running back Casey McGinness and junior quarterback A.J. Mayer both rushed for two touchdowns to lead the No. 13 Colonels to a 48-21 victory over Doss last week. Covington Catholic lost five straight regional finals against Highlands from 2011-15, but the Bluebirds were eliminated by Doss in the first round of this year’s playoffs.

Fern Creek: The Tigers ran their winning streak to seven with a 39-6 rout of Dixie Heights last week. Kyree Hawkins rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown on seven carries and also returned a fumble 75 yards for a score. Hawkins has rushed for 1,155 yards this season and scored 24 total TDs (18 rushing, five receiving, one return).

Just heard today, there is also a basketball game (Fern Creek elementary) that will fill up some of the upper parking near the high school. The 8715 Ferndale Rd is correct address, is Fern Creek Park, plenty of parking, our rear gate that open to the park will be open as an admittance gate for anyone parking at the park. That is where they are recommending Cov Cath fans park as well as any late arrivals.

CovCath has been waiting for a very very long time to get back to this stage of the playoffs and I agree with Tdy, the Blueboys will represent NKY well and I see them winning this one and getting a matchup with the winner of Owensboro/BG game...:thumb:

Didn't the NKy district play on the east side of the bracket last year with Highlands losing to Pulaski in the semi-finals? Why are they now on the western side of the bracket? I was thinking all year that it'd be BGreen and Cov Cath in the title game, but, according to the brackets, that would be a semifinal game this year. What's the deal?

MHS, Cross-bracketing initiatives brought by the KHSAA made this happen, but I don't believe it would in 2017 or 2018.

Of the 7 games that CovCath could schedule (Dixie, HHS and Grant were District games and were required to be played by the KHSAA) all but Oak Hills are still in their hunt for a State Championship.
